The Electrical Engineer at Dow’s Barry Site (South Wales, near Cardiff) plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of all electrical systems across one of the world’s largest and most complex silicone manufacturing facilities. The role provides specialist technical support to maintenance and operations teams and ensures compliance with regulatory, safety, engineering, and industry standards.
You are a highly skilled electrical engineering professional with strong problem‑solving capabilities, deep technical expertise, and a passion for safety. You excel in troubleshooting electrical issues, influencing stakeholders, and supporting continuous improvement across complex industrial environments. You are comfortable working in high‑hazard (COMAH-level) settings and can communicate technical concepts clearly across teams. You bring strong motivational skills, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to promoting electrical safety and reliability across the site.
Responsibilities
Provide expert technical support for equipment failures, root cause analysis, and reliability improvement initiatives. Offer electrical engineering input to projects—including design reviews, operability assessments, and commissioning support.
Develop, maintain, and implement standards and procedures for electrical system design and maintenance.
Ensure electrical distribution protection settings are accurate and effective for operational reliability. Maintain and update all electrical engineering documentation for the site. Become a subject matter expert (SME) in Hazardous Area Classification, Electrostatics, and ATEX directives.
Share technical knowledge within Dow through technical networks and forums.
Ensure effective training, certification, and validation of internal and third‑party personnel performing energized electrical work. Support site implementation of Dow’s Global Electrical Safe Work Standards in collaboration with EH&S Delivery. Monitor and ensure site compliance with all industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
Conduct or support Electrical Safety & Reliability Assessments (ESRA). Support major maintenance events such as plant shutdowns.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (Master’s preferred).
Actively working toward Chartered Engineer status.
5+ years of electrical engineering experience in operational, high-hazard industrial facilities (preferably chemical or petrochemical, COMAH sites).
Your Skills
Strong project leadership and execution capability.
Strong experience in troubleshooting and fault finding on electrical equipment.
Hands-on experience with:
High-voltage switchgear UPS systems and generator backup power Electrical protection systems
Experience delivering technical training or presentations.
Knowledge of major regulatory frameworks such as Electricity at Work Regulations, DSEAR, ATEX, and BS7671.
Experience supporting major maintenance events such as site shutdowns
