Experienced Day Carer — Job Role Summary
Purpose
Provide skilled, compassionate daytime care and support to clients/residents to promote independence, well being, and quality of life.
Key responsibilities
Deliver personal care: bathing, dressing, toileting, continence support, oral hygiene.
Assist with mobility, transfers, positioning and use of aids; promote safe independence.
Support with meals and hydration, including preparation, feeding assistance, and dietary monitoring.
Administer or support with medications per training and policy; accurately document.
Provide companionship, emotional support, and social stimulation; facilitate activities and appointments.
Monitor and record health status: observations, weight, fluid intake/output, mood, pain, and any changes; report concerns to supervisors/clinicians.
Perform light household tasks related to care (laundry, bed-making, cleaning patient areas).
Follow safeguarding, infection control, and health & safety procedures; escalate safeguarding concerns.
Liaise with family, multidisciplinary team, and external services as required.
Required skills & attributes
Significant hands-on care experience and strong observation skills.
Compassionate, patient-centred, respectful, and culturally sensitive.
Good communication and interpersonal skills, including record keeping and reporting.
Ability to prioritise, use initiative, and work as part of a team.
Physically able to assist with transfers and manual handling.
Confidence with basic clinical tasks (vital signs, medication support) and recognising deterioration.
Qualifications & training
Proven experience as a care assist.
Mandatory training: CPR/first aid, manual handling, safeguarding adults, infection control, medication competency.
Any role-specific training (dementia care, palliative care, PEG/enteral feeding, catheter care) as required.
Background check/DBS and professional references.
Working conditions
Daytime shifts 7:00 AM–17:00 PM, variable, alternate weekends, bank holidays. Two week rolling rota.
Settings: residential care home
Active, hands-on role with mobility and manual handling demands.
