Summary

Assistant Accountant – Peninsula Care Homes

£28,000-£35,000 per annum (full-time equivalent), Permanent

Part-time - 24 hours per week (3 days). Hours can be worked across 4–5 shorter days if preferred

Location: Central Office, Exeter with occasional travel to Care Homes

Behind every well-run care home is quiet, dependable financial discipline - the kind that doesn’t shout, but makes everything else possible.

At Peninsula Care Homes, our finance team provides the structure, insight, and stability that allows our homes to focus on what matters most: delivering safe, compassionate, high-quality care.

We’re now looking for an Assistant Accountant who takes pride in accuracy, enjoys bringing order to complexity, and wants their work to genuinely support people and positive change.

About the role

This is a hands-on, detail-driven role where your work underpins strong decision-making, governance, and operational confidence across the organisation.

Working closely with the Director of Finance, you’ll support financial reporting, analysis, and controls - while also providing practical administrative support linked to suppliers, facilities, and systems.

If you like your work to be structured, purposeful, and quietly impactful, this role will suit you well.

What you'll be doing

You’ll play a key role in keeping our financial foundations strong by:

Supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts, including accruals, prepayments, and reconciliations
Preparing KPI reporting, cost analysis, and short-term cashflow forecasts to support insight-led decisions
Reviewing payroll data and helping resolve payroll queries with home teams
Maintaining accurate records for supplier contracts, fixed assets, facilities projects, and maintenance planning
Monitoring supplier performance and supporting cost and service oversight
Assisting with external and internal audits and strengthening financial controls
Supporting finance system improvements and digital ways of working
Providing ad-hoc financial analysis and operational support when needed
Covering core bookkeeping and central office administration as required
This is a role where detail matters, and where consistency and follow-through are genuinely valued.

Who you are

You’re organised, dependable, and quietly confident with numbers. You enjoy problem‑solving, take ownership of your work, and aren’t afraid to ask questions. Ideally, you’ll bring:

Proven experience in a similar finance or accounts role
AAT Level 3 (desirable) or be qualified by experience
Strong numerical skills and excellent attention to detail
Confidence using finance systems and Microsoft Excel
An interest in developing analytical skills, including using Power BI, AI‑enabled tools, or business intelligence systems
The ability to manage competing priorities and work flexibly
A professional, friendly communication style and a collaborative approach
High standards of integrity and confidentiality
The ability to work independently while enjoying being part of a small, supportive team
You do need to care about things being done properly.

About us

Peninsula Care Homes is built on strong values and a genuine commitment to quality care. Our CARE values guide everything we do:

Committed – celebrating success and making work enjoyable
Ambitious – always looking for better ways to do things
Responsible – taking ownership and doing the right thing
Embracing – respecting individuality and personal choice
Our central team, based at our Exeter office, works closely with our homes to provide expert support in finance, operations, and governance. We’re professional but down‑to‑earth, supportive but ambitious - and we believe finance should enable great care, not complicate it. We also offer:

A role where you’ll see the difference you make every single day.
Free DBS check and auto-enrolment into our pension scheme.
Eligibility for the Blue Light Card, giving you discounts across shops, restaurants and more.
Access to a Peninsula Care Homes Mental Health First Aider, an external confidential helpline for you and your family, the ‘Whycare?’ app, and a Refer a Friend scheme (earning you money for bringing your friends on board)
If you’re looking for a part‑time finance role with purpose, variety, and a team that genuinely values what you do, we’d love to hear from you.
