Summary

We are working closely alongside with a local authority in Newport to assist with the appointment of a Refuse Loader on a 9-months contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Summary:

The Refuse Loader (Grade 3) is a vital member of the waste management team, responsible for the collection of domestic, commercial, and clinical waste and recycling across the Newport area. This role involves working as part of a crew to ensure that waste is collected safely, efficiently, and in accordance with council schedules. The position is physically demanding and serves as a key front-line service, maintaining the cleanliness of the local environment and providing high-quality service to residents.

Responsibilities:

Retrieve waste and recycling containers from residential and commercial properties, ensuring they are emptied and returned to the correct location.
Safely operate the hydraulic lifting equipment and compaction mechanisms on the refuse vehicle.
Act as a "banksman" to guide the driver during difficult maneuvers, ensuring the safety of the crew, pedestrians, and other road users.
Respond to inquiries and requests from members of the public in a polite and professional manner, acting as an ambassador for Newport City Council.
Identify and report issues such as contaminated recycling, damaged bins, or missed collections to the driver or supervisor.
Ensure that all tools and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are maintained in good condition and used correctly at all times.
Adhere strictly to Health and Safety regulations, including manual handling techniques and safe working practices on the highway.
Qualifications:

A basic level of literacy and numeracy is required to follow collection schedules and understand safety instructions.
Willingness to undergo mandatory Health and Safety training, including manual handling and safe working on the highway.
Essentials:

Ability to perform strenuous physical work for extended periods, including walking long distances and lifting/pulling heavy containers in all weather conditions.
An understanding of the importance of recycling and waste segregation is desirable.
