Summary
The ENT Clinical Directorate offers a high quality, safe and patient focused service.
The Directorate is part of the Division of Planned Care. The ENT Department at the West Middlesex Hospital provides inpatient day surgery and outpatient services for the surrounding area. It serves the patients of Richmond, Twickenham, Brentford, Hounslow, Chiswick and adjacent areas.
The ENT Department is a very busy and rapidly growing department. A large and fully comprehensive range of services are provided by the team attracting increasing referrals annually. The Department has worked to gain strong support from the Community and General Practitioners in the area. There is a very good and friendly working relationship with other specialities in the hospital with many interesting referrals originating from a number of medical and surgical specialities.
Over 90% of the surgery performed in the ENT Department is on a day surgical basis. This involves adult and paediatric care. The Inpatients are nursed on one of two wards and the average length of stay for the inpatients is approximately one night. The Department treats ENT surgical paediatric cases from the age of two and upwards.
The Consultant appointed will have continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the ENT Department.
The Consultant appointed will cover absence by arrangement with his/her colleagues.
The Consultant will take an active role in the teaching programme and research activities of the Unit and would be responsible for assisting and maintaining the ENT Library requirements.
They will participate in clinical audit within the ENT Department and the hospital as a whole. A monthly ENT Clinical Management and audit meeting occurs in the Department followed by an academic session in which research and audit studies are discussed.
They will help provide senior cover during day time on site, cover two tiers of resident’s doctors oncall, and is expected to be part of a regional overnight oncall rota joint with Imperial College ENT dept.

• Monthly ENT Audits and Head and Neck MDT/Clinics take place at West Middlesex Hospital and consultants are expected to take an active role in these.
• There is a team of administrators attached to the Department and the successful consultant appointed will be supported by the team and have administrative duties to fulfil.
• The successful candidate will work with the MDT, including a Specialist Nurse, Outpatient Team, Audiology and Speech Therapy, together with the management teams and Administration staff. There will at times be a close working relationship with the wider surgical team and with A&E and Acute Medicine to achieve Trust KPI’s.
• The candidate will be expected to help setup and run a newly established clinic based procedure clinic fully equipped with various ENT facility to relief pressure on main operating list and reduce waiting times
• The successful candidate is encouraged to liaise with the latest GIRFT ENT guidelines and apply those guidelines in their day to day clinical practice, e.g., establishing a subspecialty interest and help streamlining services by reducing unnecessary appointments and establishing a one stop care for their patients whenever possible
