Summary

We are currently seeking a skilled individual to join a team of HVAC Mechanic's at the 100th Civil Engineering Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF) Mildenhall, United Kingdom.

What will be your primary role?
The primary purpose of this position is to lead 3 or more workers to accomplish HVAC maintenance & repair work on a full time & continuing basis. You will be responsible for performing work assigned by a supervisor & ensure that subordinates complete assigned work consistent with trades & labor standards. You will install, modify, test, repair, & maintain a variety of complex boilers, heating equipment, pollution control equipment & associated systems. In addition, you will repair & maintain a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration & air conditioning units & systems used to condition areas & to cool equipment. You will perform routine maintenance on heating systems & refrigeration & air conditioning units

Qualification:
College level education minimum Level 3 in the appropriate discipline (i.e. City & Guilds 6188-30/6188-31/6188-32/6288-31) plus related experience.

What are the Key Skills required for this role?
1. Knowledge of the standard methods of combustion, heat transfer principles, & fuel characteristics to install, repair, & maintain heating boilers & domestic heating units & systems; the principles & theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, & properties of several refrigerants; & pneumatics, electricity, & basic electronics to locate faults in temperature controls & control devices, such as damper motors, mixing valves, & modulating motors.
2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, procedures, regulations & policies related to records maintenance.
3. Routine maintenance on small electric motors, feed pumps, & valves, including replacing brushes, seals, bearings, & repacking valves; servicing power sources & replacing items such as belts, fans, & fuses; installing, aligning, adjusting, & repairing oil, gas, & coal burners & other burning mechanisms as well as heating boiler components; & making repairs on refrigeration & air conditioning units & systems, including replacing major portions of assigned systems.
4. Skill in reading and applying work orders, blueprints, sketches, & other oral & written instructions.
5. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, precision measuring devices, & a variety of test equipment.
6. Ability to use shop mathematics to compute fuel consumption rates, heat generating units, & air-to-fuel ratios and conversions.
7. Ability to plan and organize work assignments.

What are the conditions of employment for this role?
1. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.
2. You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training, this position may also be coded as mission essential.
3. You will be required to complete a 6-month probationary period.
4. Overtime may be required, and you may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.
5. You must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
6. You must pass a pre-employment physical for this position. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
7. You are required to possess a valid driver’s license (Category B) in order to drive a motor vehicle to and from work sites.
8. Hours of work: 39 hours weekly. Fixed schedule: Mon-Fri 08.00 -1630. Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization’s flexible working policies.
9. You may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Overtime and/or emergency overtime may be required, however cannot be guaranteed. Shift work may be required.
10. May be required to facilitate an on-call function over a 24-hour period covering 7 days a week as per the manning roster.
11. You may work with hazardous materials such as asbestos & accumulated waste and be required to wear protective clothing on these occasions.
12. You will be required to maintain appropriate certifications.
13. You must have, or successfully complete, in-house system familiarization and pass review with DIO Authorized Person (Boilers and Pressure Systems) to gain Skilled Person certification within 12 months of employment. Training to achieve can be provided. Failure to obtain certification within 12 month period due to employee negligence will result in separation from position. If failure to obtain certifications is due to circumstances outside the employee's control, management will work with the employee to satisfy the requirements within a reasonable time frame.
