Summary
This appointment will be based at the West Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary. Leeds General Infirmary is the largest tertiary cardiac centre in the United Kingdom, providing services to a population of 2.8 million in West Yorkshire, with supra-regional services to the broader population of Yorkshire & Humber, constituting 5.8 million. Leeds is a high volume centre performing 2200 PCI per annum, of which 1100 are primary PCI maintaining the centres status as busiest PPCI centre in the UK. The cardiology department consists of 2 inpatient wards (one acute admissions ward), a day case interventional ward, a day case radial lounge, 6 lab catheter suite and a 10 bed Coronary Care Unit. The core PCI team consist of Dr Heeraj Bulluck, Dr Arka Das, Dr Sameer Kurmani, Dr Abdul Mozid, Dr Jennifer Rossington, Dr Murugu Veerasamy and Professor Stephen Wheatcroft. There are a further 4 interventionalists involved in the acute service with specialist interest in structural intervention or research and 11 visiting consultants supporting out of hours working. The Fellow will work closely with Dr Abdul Mozid who leads the highly regarded chronic total occlusion PCI service at Leeds. This is one of the highest volume CTO services in the UK with around 125-150 cases completed per year with >90% success rate using all 'hybrid' techniques. The Fellow would be expected to gain first operator experience in all these techniques and familiarity with the CTO toolbox. There is also a high volume complex PCI service and there will be opportunities to work with the other PCI consultants during elective and acute lists. During the fellowship there will be frequent exposure to complex PCI equipment including for lesion modification (Rotablation, Shockwave, Laser, Orbital atherectomy) and intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT). Leeds has a leading structural programme; however this Fellowship is focused on complex coronary intervention. This Fellowship is designed to provide the skills required to be an independent PCI operator with high levels of exposure complex PCI and CTOs. The post is fixed term for one year (starting August 2026).
