Summary

Maintain already established Specialist Nurse Clinics. Plan and develop Specialist Nursing service. Lead resource within the ENT area. Assess and diagnose the cause of a patients problem; thereafter provide the appropriate nursing intervention and care, evaluate and discharge. Detailed information giving is imperative with verbal information being reinforced by way of patient information leaflets specifically relating to the patient problem. Identify methods of self-help along with rationale for any treatment and its administration. Contact telephone numbers are detailed on these leaflets. All aspects of health promotion, health education and continuity of care are vital components within our nursing care programme. Empower patient choice and involvement initiating appropriate action. Empathically communicate highly sensitive information to patients, relatives and carers in a highly supportive private environment. Ensure the maintenance of accurate, legible and up to date patient records. Provide clinical advice and support to health care professionals both within and across organisational boundaries such as Minor Injury Units, General Practitioners, NHS Direct, Pharmacies, Social Services, Paediatric liaison and other specialist units. Highly developed hand-eye co-ordination is essential to enable the user of the microscope to perform ear examinations involving such procedures as removing foreign bodies and micro suction in both emergency and routine patients. Accountable and responsible for the care given to each patient during nurse-led clinics such as, aural care, dizzy, tracheostomy, skin prick, tonsillectomy, rhinology clinics, tongue tie. Work with patients and carers to develop services. Participate with future developments in improving nursing care within the department. Would on occasions be expected to manage an area of clinical activity within the outpatient department. Take responsibility in the absence of the Nurse Manager, management duties for the department such as; day to allocation of staff and smooth running of the department. In the absence of the nurse manager organise and arrange the duty roster and cover for the department and respond to frequently changing departmental needs including cover for sickness at short notice. Participate in the planning and development of the ENT service through working parties and peer group meetings. Directly supports the department Nurse Manager for the ENT clinical area and its multi-disciplinary team. Work in close collaboration with the Consultants and other medical staff across boundaries to ensure the service meets patient needs. Continual participation in the development of specialist protocols and policies by means of working parties and audit. Report and manage untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies and injury or drug administration errors as detailed in trust-wide and local protocols and procedures, referring to department manager if available. Participate in staff appraisals ensuring all staff have an annual appraisal that includes a personal development plan relevant to their needs.
