The London Borough of Hillingdon’s Homes & Communities Directorate delivers essential housing services to residents, with a strong focus on prevention, early intervention and supporting households at risk of homelessness. Their Housing Options Service is fast‑paced, high‑demand and committed to delivering timely, lawful and customer‑focused outcomes.

The Role
Hillingdon are seeking an experienced Housing Advice & Homeless Prevention Officer who can hit the ground running within their Housing Options duty service. The successful candidate will complete assessments, undertake prevention and relief work, and manage a varied caseload in line with statutory duties.

You will be responsible for carrying out homelessness enquiries, drafting s184 decision letters and delivering high‑quality casework under the Housing Act 1996 (Part VII), the Homelessness Reduction Act and other relevant legislation. This role requires resilience, strong decision‑making skills and the ability to work effectively in a pressurised environment.

Hillingdon offers flexible working arrangements. Following a two‑to‑four‑week office‑based induction (depending on competency), the role will be 50% office‑based.

Key Responsibilities
Deliver homelessness assessments, prevention and relief casework.

Manage a varied caseload within statutory timescales.

Carry out detailed homelessness enquiries and gather evidence.

Draft high‑quality s184 decision letters.

Provide accurate housing advice in line with legislation and policy.

Work as part of the Housing Options duty service.

Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with statutory duties.

Work effectively under pressure and manage competing demands.

Candidate Requirements
Experience in Housing Advice, Homeless Prevention or Homelessness Assessment.

Strong knowledge of Part VII Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act.

Proven experience drafting s184 decision letters.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced Housing Options environment.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Empathy, discretion, reliability and a customer‑focused approach.

Self‑motivated, flexible and able to work as part of a team.

Basic DBS required.
