About the role

We’re looking for a Fire Maintenance Manager to take ownership of fire safety performance across our nationwide retail estate. You’ll play a key role in keeping our customers, colleagues and stores safe - driving fire maintenance, compliance, continuous improvement and exceptional operational standards.

Working closely with our Head of Fire Engineering, you’ll turn technical expertise into clear action, support our field teams, and lead improvements that enhance safety, efficiency and value for money.

The hiring manager for this vacancy is Daniel Villiers

You will be responsible for

  • Acting as the fire safety subject matter expert for Maintenance teams, advising on alarms, fire doors, compartmentation, suppression and wider fire protection systems.
  • Validating contractor scopes and quotations to ensure accuracy, value and alignment with Tesco’s fire protection standards.
  • Governing national fire maintenance processes, ensuring consistent compliance reporting and clear ownership.
  • Leading post‑completion technical reviews to ensure remedial works meet regulations, British Standards and Tesco requirements.
  • Supporting design reviews, refurbishments and change projects to embed fire safety considerations early.
  • Driving process and technology improvements across fire maintenance.
  • Providing clear year‑on‑year improvements in service, standards and cost efficiency.
  • Advising senior stakeholders on national fire compliance issues and recommending solutions.
  • Identifying recurring fire safety issues across the estate and developing targeted improvement programmes.
  • Ensuring robust documentation and evidence to support audits, compliance checks and regulatory inspections.
  • Supporting national incident responses, investigations and corrective action planning.
  • Coordinating complex, multi‑stakeholder fire maintenance issues to successful resolution.
  • Overseeing Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) actions to ensure accurate translation, prioritisation and timely close‑out.
  • Delivering an annual fire maintenance improvement plan.

Key day‑to‑day responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the delivery and management of fire risk assessments, working closely with internal teams and external contractors to ensure actions are identified, prioritised and progressed effectively.
  • Reviewing and challenging contractor recommendations, assessing the viability of proposed remedial works and ensuring all solutions align with Tesco’s Fire Strategy and store operating models.
  • Taking an active role in the management of fire impairments, including coordinating responses, managing risk, and supporting senior-level escalations where required across the UK estate.
  • Acting as a central point of contact for fire safety enforcement notifications, working collaboratively with Tesco’s internal Legal team to ensure appropriate, timely and compliant responses.
  • Serving as the maintenance lead for fire investigations, liaising with local authorities, internal stakeholders and technical teams to support investigations and implement learnings.
  • Building strong relationships with key stakeholders, including stores, maintenance teams, contractors, enforcement bodies and legal partners, to ensure fire safety risks are clearly understood and well managed.

As the role develops, there will be scope to shape processes, influence strategy and contribute to continuous improvement in how fire safety risks are managed across Tesco.
