Summary

The Ophthalmology Department at University Hospital Birmingham is based across four sites, Good Hope, Solihull, Heartlands and Queen Elizabeth hospitals. It provides Ophthalmology outpatient facilities and day case surgery. There are 35 consultants who provide an outpatient and surgical service. The entire range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics are provided and there is close communication with consultants in other specialities. As well as consultant ophthalmologists the eye service is supported by staff and specialist doctors, Specialty Registrars, an Orthoptic Department, Optometrists and imaging technicians, clinical nurse specialists as well as nurses. Pre-operative assessments and Biometry are done on site as well as fundus fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography with ultra-wide field Optos imaging, Optical coherence tomography, corneal topography, Heidelberg retinal tomography as well as ocular ultrasound and UBM. The aim of this post is to significantly increase the specialising doctors' ability to diagnose and manage the full range of medical retina cases and manage patients safely. The aim of this fellowship is to enable the trainee to be competent to manage a medical retina service as a sub-specialist independently including intravitreal injections and lasers.. There will be particular attention to developing the trainee's knowledge of retina cases including regular interaction with the wider multidisciplinary teams. . In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in audit and governance activities and research clinics and teaching and training allied health medical retina professionals.
