Summary
The Urologyteam comprises 2 senior lecturers and five consultant surgeons, three of whom make a contribution to the hospital's urodynamic service. Special interests within the department include the management of patients requiring partial nephroctomy, retroperitoneal node dissection, renal tumours invading the cava, laproscopic radical prostectomy and neobladders. Over 100 laparoscopic operations are performed each year and the unit performs the full range of general urological operations. The unit also provides support for gynaecological colleagues at the Birmingham Women's Hospital, who undertake major abdominal and pelvic surgery. In addition to a weekly MDT meeting there is a 'tracker' meeting which ensures all patients under the care of the MDT and currently receiving treatment are reviewed by the team each week. The urology service is supported by 7 clinical nurse specialists, and the unit comprises a single ward. The unit works as an integrated and flexible unit, cross covering operating days, Ward Rounds and clinics, MDTs, emergencies and holidays. There are close working relationships between all surgical specialties as all surgical wards are in close proximity to each other. Joint consultant operating between specialties is common practice within the hospital.
