You act as a vital support system for both the teacher and the students to ensure the classroom runs smoothly.
Main Task: Supporting small groups or individual students with their reading, writing, and learning activities.
Environment: Setting up the classroom, preparing resources (worksheets, art supplies), and managing student behavior.
The Bridge: Helping students who are struggling or have special needs to understand the lesson.
2. Job Benefits
Rewarding Work: Seeing a child finally "get it" or grow in confidence is deeply fulfilling.
Term-Time Only: You get approximately 13 weeks of holiday a year, aligned with school breaks.
School Hours: Typically 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, providing an excellent work-life balance for parents or students.
Step into Teaching: It is the best way to gain experience if you eventually want to become a fully qualified teacher.
3. Core Requirements
Enhanced DBS: A mandatory criminal record check (legal requirement).
Patience & Calm: The ability to remain cool under pressure or when dealing with difficult behavior.
Communication: Being able to explain complex things in simple ways to children.
Flexibility: Every day is different; you might move from a maths lesson to a PE trip in an hour.
4. Qualifications
GCSEs: Most schools require Grades 9 to 4 ($A^*$ to $C$) in English and Maths.
Vocational Certificates: A Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is the industry standard.
Experience: Volunteering in a school or working with youth groups is often valued as much as a certificate.
