About the Role:
We are recruiting on behalf of a leading national civil engineering contractor for an experienced National Grid Competent Person. This is a critical 6-month contract assignment starting in February 2026, where you will be embedded within the contractor's team to ensure safety and compliance on a major National Grid project in South Wales.
You will provide essential electrical safety authority for civil engineering activities interacting with or in close proximity to live high-voltage transmission assets. Your role is to enable safe working for the contractor's construction teams, ensuring all work is carried out under fully compliant and authorised safety documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
· Act as the authorised Competent Person for the civil engineering contractor in accordance with National Grid Safety Rules (NGSR).
· Apply expert knowledge of NSI 05 (Operational Safety) and NSI 08 (Competent Person Authorisation) to civil construction environments (e.g., substation construction, cable installation, groundworks near apparatus).
· Develop, review, and authorise key safety documents (SFT, LOA, Electrical Safety Documents) specific to the contractor's scope of works.
· Establish and authorise points of isolation and earthing to create safe working zones for civil engineering activities.
· Provide daily safety briefings and leadership to the contractor's site teams, ensuring strict adherence to NGSR.
· Liaise directly between the contractor's site management and the National Grid Control Engineers to coordinate permits and safe working practices.
· Conduct site safety inspections and audits, ensuring the civil works comply with all electrical safety constraints.
Our Client:
You will be working for a respected civil engineering contractor with a long-term framework for delivering National Grid infrastructure projects. This assignment is on a significant capital project in South Wales.
Essential Requirements (Non-Negotiable):
· Current and valid National Grid Competent Person (CP) authorisation.
· Proven, recent experience applying NSI 05 and NSI 08 in a live network environment.
· Experience working directly for or with a civil engineering or construction contractor on the National Grid network.
· Thorough understanding of the National Grid Safety Rules (NGSR) and their application to construction activities.
· ECS Gold Card (or equivalent) with the appropriate CP designation.
· Excellent communication skills, with the ability to act as the key safety interface between contractor crews and utility client.
Desirable Experience:
· Experience supporting substation new build, cable laying, or overhead line refurbishment projects.
· Understanding of the civil/electrical interface and associated risks.
· Previous contract experience working Outside IR35.
What We Offer:
· A clear Outside IR35 contract assignment.
· A competitive daily rate.
· A 6-month contract on a major infrastructure project.
· The opportunity to work with a leading civil engineering contractor.
How to Apply:
If you are a fully authorised National Grid CP with NSI 05 & 08 experience and have a background supporting civil engineering contractors, please send your CV for immediate consideration.
Please ensure your CV clearly details your CP authorisations, specific experience with NSI 05/08, and examples of projects where you have worked with contractors.
