Chesterfield Borough Council is recruiting a market attendant to support the day-to-day operation of Chesterfield’s open market. This vacancy has arisen providing an excellent opportunity to join a busy, customer-focused frontline service at the heart of the town centre.
About the role
As a market attendant, you will play a key role in ensuring Chesterfield’s open market operates safely, efficiently and to a high standard. The role is practical, varied and outdoors-based, supporting traders, visitors and town centre events.
You will work closely with the market supervisor and wider team to set up and maintain market infrastructure, keep the market areas clean and welcoming, and assist with speciality markets and events throughout the year.
Key responsibilities include:
Setting out market stalls, boards and trestles in line with approved layouts
Assisting with the safe distribution and collection of traders’ storage boxes
Keeping all market areas clean, tidy and safe, including litter picking, sweeping and power washing
Supporting the set-up and removal of pop-up stalls, pedestrian barriers and demountable structures
Carrying out basic maintenance and minor repairs to market stalls
Maintaining positive working relationships with traders, colleagues and the public
Supporting specialty markets and town centre events as required
Working in line with health and safety, equality, safeguarding and council policies
What we are looking for:
You will be reliable, hands-on and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and you will enjoy working as part of a team and dealing with the public.
Essential requirements include:
Good verbal communication skills
Ability to follow plans and instructions accurately
Ability to carry out manual handling tasks safely
Awareness of health and safety and safe working practices
Experience of working with the public
Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends and bank holidays
Desirable skills and experience:
Experience of basic maintenance or repairs
Experience working at pace and prioritising tasks
Knowledge of waste management and recycling
Additional information
The role requires a flexible approach to working hours. Duties may be carried out at different council locations as required. Full training and protective equipment will be provided.
