Here at Serco we are looking for Personal Education and Learning Support Tutor to join our team at HMP Dovegate a category B male establishment prison based on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border near Uttoxeter. The operational capacity is for 1160 prisoners and it takes a whole team of people to keep the facility safe, secure and in proper working order.

We have an opening for a Personal Education and Learning Support Tutor to join our team. The key purpose of this role is to assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans according to those needs. They will plan, organise, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities. The role involves teaching and mentoring students in small groups, and one-on-one. As a Learning Support tutor they will work with teachers and teaching assistants who work with students with disabilities, and maintain accurate records, including learner attendance, records of work, progression routes and levels of achievement.
Additionally, they will assist management in the delivery of an education provision which increases employability, reduces the likelihood of reoffending and prepares prisoners for a successful return to the community.


Other aspects of the role involves:

- Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with learners, to create an appropriate environment for learning.
- Carefully managing the use of equipment and resources actively encouraging learners to value them.
- Regularly evaluating own work and encouraging learners to evaluate constructively the programmes they attend, in order to contribute to the continuous development of the service.
- To provide learners with feedback and guidance to support their learning on a regular basis.


What you need to do the job:

Qualifications:
Ideally, we are looking for an individual who holds a Level 4 Award in Education and Training/Cert Ed/PGCE as well as a Level 4 SEN qualification or is currently working towards this.
Having an Assessor Practising Certificate (APC) is also desirable.


Experience:

The successful post holder must have proven experience of working in an environment that demands strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
They must have demonstrated flexibility and the ability to work to deadlines and under pressure.
It is important they have a solid understanding of the JCQ Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments.
Be familiar with the Equality Act 2010.
Having experience of a custodial environment would be an advantage but not essential.


Skills and Abilities:

Additionally, they must be able to use nationally standardised tests and assessments.
Understand the theoretical basis underlying psychometric tests.
Be able to form good working relationships.
Respond to identified needs by undertaking self-directed learning, research and training as required.
Establishes internal/external links as required.
