Summary
Clinical: The post will form part of the consultant PCI on-call rota. PCI sessions will be in the on-call urgent cardiac catheter lab dealing with patients presenting with NSTEMI, STEMI and out of hospital cardiac arrest from around the region. To provide expert care for patients admitted to Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals with cardiology conditions and to provide specialist interventional cardiology opinion to colleagues in referring hospitals around the region, as needed. To provide clinical expertise in the sub-specialist area appropriate to the training and expertise of the appointee and the service needs of the department. To provide in-patient opinions and, where appropriate, continuing supervision for patients with cardiology conditions. The appointees will contribute to the on-call consultant interventional cardiologist rota at the Freeman. The frequency of on-call will be approximately a 1-in-11 shared with PCI colleagues from the Freeman. The interventionist is typically on call. It is anticipated the successful candidate will contribute a regular day-time on-call PCI session weekly in addition to on-call for PCI out of hours. Administrative: The appointee will participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance, making a significant contribution to multidisciplinary audit and risk management activities. Assist the Cardiothoracic Directorate Manager and Clinical Director in the timely investigation of complaints working to provide reports within the timeframe set out by Trust policy. Contribute to the general organisation and running of Cardiothoracic Services within the Trust, working in collaboration with colleagues and report to the Clinical Director. The appointee will manage their own cardiac catheter lab sessions to ensure efficient use of resources, to include supervision of trainees. They will contribute to the management of the Cardiology Clinic service overall. Research: The Trust welcomes and encourages research as a high profile activity that compliments the service provided. The emphasis is on studies that fall within the National Institute of Health Research Portfolio. Teaching: Participate in the teaching of undergraduate students in both medicine and dentistry. In particular the Cardiology Department provides intensive teaching during the Foundations of Clinical Practice Cardiology teaching week. In addition, the unit teaches students within various phases of the course, including, but not limited to, Student Selected Components and Hospital Based Practice teaching. Active involvement in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees in the department with specific responsibility for the education development of Foundation doctors, Core Medical Trainees, and Specialty Training Registrars. Participate in the teaching and training of any other health care professionals within the Directorate.
