The Role: Science Technician

This role is for a dedicated professional who will be responsible for providing comprehensive technical support to the Science Department in a secondary school setting in the Wakefield area. The post-holder's primary function is to enable high-quality practical science lessons by ensuring all materials, equipment, and apparatus are prepared, safe, and fully functional. The role requires a strong commitment to health and safety, excellent technical skills, and a proactive approach to supporting teaching staff and students. This long term position is to start ASAP on a full time basis.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working as a Science Technician in an educational or laboratory environment is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrable ability to safely handle and store hazardous substances
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Enhanced Child DBS on the updated service (Willingness to apply for one)

Essential Skills

  • Strong Scientific Knowledge: A good understanding of practical procedures across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Excellent Organisational Skills: Ability to manage a busy workload, prioritise tasks, and maintain a highly organised prep room and inventory.
  • Meticulous Attention to Detail: Essential for accurate preparation of solutions, recording results, and maintaining safety documentation.
  • Proficiency in Health and Safety: Deep knowledge and adherence to COSHH and school-specific safety protocols, particularly in a laboratory setting.
  • Effective Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with teaching staff, students, and suppliers.
  • IT Literacy: Competence in using data logging software, spreadsheets for stock control, and general school IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare apparatus, equipment, and chemical solutions for science lessons across all three disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
  • Ensure the safe and correct storage, use, and disposal of all hazardous materials, chemicals, and equipment, adhering strictly to CLEAPSS guidelines.
  • Manage and maintain the inventory, conducting regular stock checks and ordering new materials/equipment as required within departmental budgets.
  • Carry out routine maintenance, checks, and minor repairs on equipment and apparatus to minimise downtime and ensure operational safety.
  • Assist teaching staff with practical demonstrations and experiments, sometimes within the classroom, providing technical advice and support.
  • Maintain the prep rooms and laboratories, ensuring they are clean, tidy, and organised for efficient use and a professional environment.
  • Provide technical support for ICT and data-logging equipment used within the department.
  • Care for living organisms and plants within the department's science facilities (e.g., fish, small animals, and greenhouse materials).
  • Liaise with suppliers to arrange deliveries, check invoices, and catalogue incoming stock.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records of equipment logs, stock levels, safety data sheets, and risk assessments.
