Summary
Leadership Develop and articulate a clear strategic vision for oncology pharmacy services in alignment with CCL and Pharmacy Department goals. Lead the design, planning, and execution of service transformation initiatives, including business cases and innovation pipelines. Represent CCL at national and regional oncology networks, building strategic partnerships and promoting the organisations reputation. Drive a culture of clinical excellence, innovation, and accountability, embedding leadership at all levels of the team Deputise in the absence of the Clinical Services Manager, Work collaboratively with external agencies and hold responsibility for the Oncology pharmacy service across CCL, including medicines management and risk management relating to medicines use. Be a representative for Pharmacy at senior hospital wide medicines governance meetings. Assist in the development of a vision and strategic direction and lead on the development, planning / implementation and evaluation of long-term strategies, operational policies and standards for Oncology clinical pharmacy services and ensure that these are aligned with and support the Pharmacy Department and CCL strategies. Provide effective and enabling leadership in the Oncology team and contribute to the culture of leadership promoting equality and the value of diversity. Represent CCL at external networks, influencing, contributing to and maintaining awareness of national and regional clinical pharmacy strategies, policies, standards and changes in political agendas. To work with Pharmacy colleagues to promote the reputation of the Pharmacy Department and CCL to patients and potential staff, through professional papers, conferences and provision of high-quality care and training Management Lead operational planning and delivery for oncology pharmacy, ensuring safe, efficient, and patient-centred care across inpatient and outpatient settings. Oversee workforce and skill-mix planning, talent management, and succession planning within the oncology pharmacy team, including the aseptics team. Monitor and evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs), ensuring data-driven improvements and reporting outcomes at senior leadership forums. Actively contribute to the annual budget planning process, developing strategies for cost containment, service efficiencies, and income generation To support the Clinical Services Manager in the development and delivery of a business plan for pharmacy aimed at developing the service, (including risk management strategies) which details future service provision and incorporates set objectives for all key areas and personnel. To undertake workforce/capacity planning and skill mix reviews ensuring staff resources are used optimally and staffing levels and capabilities are always maintained at safe levels. To be responsible for ensuring that pharmacy Oncology related incidents and risk are investigated, and remedial measures / mitigations are implemented and communicated / promoted to all staff. To be responsible for ensuring all clinical pharmacy service health and safety risks are reduced to a minimum and where high-risk situations remain insufficiently mitigated, they are placed on the Risk Register and action plans developed and implemented. Assist the Clinical Pharmacy Manager in providing the pharmacy response to formal complaints liaising with other departments and the complaints officer as necessary. Ensure that statements are taken according to CCL Policy and time deadlines are met. Utilise the feedback from complaints to influence strategic developments and business planning. Supervise and support a team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to ensure high quality pharmaceutical care is delivered to all patients of CCL. Provide guidance, mentorship, and training to staff to foster professional development and enhance team performance. Legislative Compliance Support the Clinical Pharmacy Services Manager in ensuring that legislative, ethical and professional standards are met, including: The Medicines Act - Department of Health, e.g. controlled drugs Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, e.g. unlicensed medicines, recalls. The Royal Pharmaceutical Society Standards for Hospital Pharmacy Services National guidance, e.g. NICE NG05 Regional and local guidance Pharmacy Operations and Patient Care The post holder is responsible for defining the strategy for the Oncology service to meet the needs of the organisation. Undertake non-medical prescribing if needed for service requirements. Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information relating both to medicines management and people management and actively supporting others in pharmacy when unable to manage these situations alone. Advise clinical staff on the development of clinical guidelines and protocols. Regularly review, develop and implement plans to improve the quality and efficiency of the Oncology service. To ensure effective communication systems are maintained and developed. Oversee the procurement, preparation and dispensing of medications, ensuring accuracy and adherence to standard operating protocols, including the provision of cytotoxic medicines (from CCL aseptics unit and external partners) Work closely with the outpatient pharmacy department at 40GP to ensure seamless patient care for oncology patients (and others using this service). Ensure all pharmacy services comply with Cleveland Clinic standards, national regulations, and best practices. Support the clinical pharmacy services across CCL, including the 24/7 and unit dosing/BCMA models Service development Identify and implement new models of care, including advanced clinical roles, digital systems, and cross-site integration to improve service delivery. Initiate and lead clinical service development projects and audits, translating findings into service improvement initiatives. Promote a learning environment that encourages continuous professional development and service innovation. Lead strategic development of oncology clinical trials pharmacy services, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and integration with clinical services. Monitor and evaluate medicines related protocols and guidelines across a range of tumour groups throughout the organisation, working in partnership with multidisciplinary caregivers where necessary to develop new ways of working. Propose policy or service changes which improve clinical pharmacy services and may have multidisciplinary and resource implications or may lead to improved efficiency or cost improvement opportunities. Lead Oncology service improvement projects. Lead and promote the implementation and expansion of Oncology services such as clinical trial services. Promote innovation and evidence-based practice. Develop and deliver research and development, quality improvement activities and audit of practice throughout the Pharmacy services. Ensure medicines related clinical audit is undertaken by self and staff to provide assurance of effective medicines use across CCL and to support continuous quality improvement and risk reduction. Ensure work is published in peer reviewed journals, presented at national conferences and disseminated through professional and/or other networks Collaboration and Communication Foster strong relationships with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, ensuring seamless integration of pharmacy services into patient care. Ensure timely and accurate communication of critical medication information to all stakeholders, including patients, physicians, and staff.
