Summary
Engineering & Fleet Workshop Manager (287jc) – Leicester - £50 – 60k + Benefits
This is a leadership role well suited to a former SNCO, Warrant Officer or Officer with experience in engineering management, ideally coming from a REME LAD background, or someone who has managed an HGV workshop in a civilian sector.
DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS RECRUITMENT CONSULTANCY, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EX MILITARY.
As Engineering & Fleet Workshop Manager, you will take full responsibility for the planning, readiness and compliance of engineering and fleet maintenance activities. You will lead a multi-skilled team, ensure assets are safe, available and legally compliant, and drive discipline, standards and continuous improvement across the workshop and field engineering functions.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and Command the Engineering Function, managing a mixed team that includes:
- Fleet Maintenance Coordinator
- Fleet Administrator
- HGV Technicians
- Fixed-site Engineers
- Field-based MHE Engineers
Deliver safe, compliant and effective maintenance operations, aligned with company strategy and operational requirements.
Ensure full legislative and regulatory compliance, including:
- Road Transport Legislation
- LOLER (Lift Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations)
- PUWER
- COSHH
- Health & Safety at Work Act
- Thorough Examination requirements
- Internal ISO Integrated Management Systems
- Internal SLAs
Drive high standards of leadership and performance management, including:
- Managing strong and weak performance
- Identifying training and development needs
- Conducting 1-to-1s, appraisals, coaching and mentoring
- Supporting team development and succession planning
Manage engineering systems and assets, including:
- Computerised Mobile Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
- Stock control, issuing, audits and replenishment
- Departmental budgets and expenditure tracking
Plan, analyse and report, preparing and presenting KPIs to senior management.
Work closely with operational teams to achieve operational targets, improve efficiency and remove friction from processes.
Champion Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ) by:
- Completing risk assessments and method statements
- Leading safe systems of work
- Supporting incident investigations and corrective actions
Drive continuous improvement, using root cause analysis to identify defect trends and reduce repeat failures.
Maintain discipline and standards, including:
- Attendance management
- Timekeeping
- Conducting investigations in line with H&S and disciplinary policies
- Delivering daily team briefings and toolbox talks
Uphold professional standards, ensuring workshop housekeeping and presentation meet company expectations.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience managing an engineering workshop (military or civilian)
- Proven leadership in a fast-paced, operational engineering environment
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to operate confidently with digital systems (CMMS, MS Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Personal Profile
- Confident people leader able to motivate, direct and develop a multi-skilled team
- Calm under pressure, decisive and accountable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Dynamic, resilient and determined approach to problem-solving
- GCSEs (or equivalent Service education) including Maths & English
- Experience within waste, recycling or heavy fleet environments is beneficial, but not essential as full induction and systems training provided.
In return they are offering a starting salary circa £50 – 60k depending on skills and experience, annual leave is 33 days which includes bank holidays, laptop and company phone provided. Other benefits include Perkbox which is the company’s shop and save voucher scheme, an extra day’s annual leave for your birthday after a years’ service and long service awards. And finally, there is also enhanced maternity and paternity and for the manager its two weeks company sick pay
