Summary
The T&O department at RBH is a busy service running two parallel arms: trauma & elective. The Trauma Service operates 365 days a year & manages all aspects of musculoskeletal trauma in adults & children. Whilst this does include around 480-500 fragility proximal femoral fractures each year, these are nursed separately on our dedicated, medical led, fractured neck of femur ward. Instead, with an ever-aging population, the service is seeing an increasing proportion of polycomorbid and medically complex silver trauma patients admitted to our 30-bed, 2 theatre, trauma unit with a range of fragility fractures. It is this cohort of patients for which the successful applicant will primarily be responsible for. The elective arm of the service operates through the ring fenced, 30 bed, 4 theatre, Redlands Elective Orthopaedic Unit. The service sees a significant cohort of frailer geriatric patients presenting a wide variety of co-morbidities that need to be safely managed through the perioperative period. As such, an important component of the job will be to liaise with the Redlands team regarding the medical aspects of elective perioperative care.
