Summary
The Band 5 Staff Nurse will provide safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to women undergoing gynaecological treatment across inpatient and day Case unit. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for delivering holistic, person-centred care that promotes dignity, respect, and patient empowerment.
This role involves caring for patients with a wide range of gynaecological conditions, including pre- and post-operative recovery, management of acute presentations such as hyperemesis gravidarum, early pregnancy complications, and supporting outpatient interventions. The nurse will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care, ensuring adherence to clinical standards, infection prevention, and Trust policies.
The post holder will actively contribute to patient education, discharge planning, and health promotion, supporting women to make informed decisions about their care. They will also participate in service development initiatives, quality improvement projects, and the education and mentorship of students and junior staff. As a Band 5 Staff Nurse in the Gynaecology Ward and Day Case Unit, you will deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to women undergoing elective and emergency gynaecological procedures. Your responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualised care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. You will provide pre-operative and post-operative care, ensuring patient safety and comfort throughout their stay. Duties involve monitoring vital signs, managing pain, administering medications, and supporting recovery following surgical interventions such as hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and minor procedures.
You will educate patients on treatment plans, discharge instructions, and health promotion, including sensitive topics like menopause and fertility. Maintaining accurate documentation and adhering to infection control and safeguarding policies are essential. You will assist in coordinating admissions and discharges, ensuring efficient patient flow within the ward and day case unit. Participation in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and mandatory training is expected to uphold clinical standards. Excellent communication, empathy, and teamwork skills are vital to deliver compassionate care and enhance patient experience.

Key Responsibilities include:
• Undertake comprehensive patient assessments, develop individualised care plans, and evaluate outcomes.
• Prepare patients for theatre, monitor recovery, manage pain, and provide discharge education.
• Admit and discharge patients efficiently in the day case unit, ensuring adherence to protocols and safe transitions.
• Administer medications safely, including controlled drugs, and maintain accurate records.
• Offer clear information and emotional support regarding procedures, recovery, and self-care, including menopause and fertility-related guidance.
• Maintain a clean, safe environment and comply with infection prevention and health and safety standards.
• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anaesthetists, and allied health professionals to deliver coordinated care.
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation in electronic and paper systems, safeguarding confidentiality.
• Participate in mandatory training, clinical supervision, and reflective practice to maintain professional competence.
• Engage in audits, feedback initiatives, and contribute to quality improvement and service development projects.
