Be part of the world-renowned WorldPop Group at the University of Southampton, a global top 100 university (QS World Rankings 2021). WorldPop is an award winning, multi-sectoral team of researchers, technicians and project specialists working on producing data on population distributions and characteristics at high spatial resolution.

We are seeking to recruit a Specialist Technician to source, process, organise and analyse subnational demographic data and their associated digital boundaries. WorldPop produces global gridded population datasets through the spatial disaggregation of population data from a range of sources, including censuses, surveys, projections and estimates, all matched to their associated boundaries to facilitate mapping. Following the production of new 2015-2030 gridded estimates, WorldPop is working on the transition towards more regular updates of these datasets. This requires ongoing assembly, harmonization and organization of multi-temporal subnational population count, age/sex breakdown and associated digital boundary data. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with experience and understanding of demographic data and strong data management skills to lead this work. Skills and experience in working with administrative boundary data in GIS will also be beneficial.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the preparation of high-quality publications from the projects to be undertaken and will also be supported to present these projects to stakeholders and at national and international conferences. Further, the individual will contribute to projects across the WorldPop group, providing opportunities to work with UN agencies, governments and researchers around the world.

The University of Southampton is a signatory of the Technician Commitment and a partner affiliate of the National Technician Development Centre (NTDC). We are committed to supporting our technical staff and offer a wide range of opportunities including networking, mentoring, training, professional registration, and career development. We really value all our technical staff and recognise the broad range of skills they have in support of education, research, and enterprise activities. By joining Southampton, you will be part of a bigger technical community, offering support and guidance.

The University of Southampton offers excellent benefits including flexible working, a generous holiday allowance of 30 days, 6 additional university closure days plus public holidays. We will support your long-term future too, with access to a generous pension scheme with the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of employee discounts.
