Summary
Come and be part of a project team collecting and analysing data to understand what makes good Spotted Woodpecker Habitat. Using field measurements and remote sensing of 1km squares which were surveyed in 2022 for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers by Hampshire Ornithological Society, we continue to build on this information with further research and investigation. What's the role about?This role will be fieldwork-based working outside in woodland (in suitable weather) located across Hampshire with a large part of the work in the New Forest. The role will be managed by the Senior Research Assistant.Primary focuses will be collecting data on catkin and deadwood abundance which are thought to be important habitat characteristics for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers.The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting data using digital apps to report on various tree species, having existing experience in winter tree identification. Good navigation skills are important along with being confident in using digital resources.Essential skills, knowledge and experience:Good navigation skills using maps and GPS to locate sampling points in woodlandAbility to identify tree and shrub speciesMaintain good relationships with landowners and respect their requestsExperience of capturing electronic data sets using excel, ArcGISUK driving licence, or right to drive in the UKDesirable skills, knowledge and experience:Knowledge/experience of woodland structure recordingThis is a Full-time role for 37.5 hours per week, on a Fixed-term contract of 2 months.
