Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Compression Lead to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

What you'll be doing

As Compression Lead, you will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of CO₂ compression systems within BBK’s scope. This includes high-capacity compressors, associated piping, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems, and integration into the wider CCUS process. You’ll act as the subject matter lead for compression technology, managing interfaces with licensors, OEM suppliers, and construction teams to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient delivery.

• Lead BBK’s scope for CO₂ compression systems, including mechanical, electrical, and control elements
• Manage interfaces with compressor OEMs, licensors, and EPC partners
• Oversee design reviews, ensuring constructability, safety, and alignment with process
requirements
• Translate OEM specifications into buildable MEP packages
• Lead procurement strategy and technical evaluation for compression equipment
• Manage installation sequencing, testing, and commissioning activities
• Ensure compliance with UK regulations (pressure systems, ATEX/DSEAR, rotating machinery standards)
• Provide technical leadership during construction and commissioning, resolving compression-related issues
• Report on progress, risks, and performance of the compression scope
• Capture lessons learned to strengthen BBK’s capability in energy transition projects

Who we're looking for

The successful candidate will have the following personal qualities and experience:

  • Degree (BEng/MEng or equivalent) in Mechanical, Process, or Electrical Engineering
  • Significant experience in rotating equipment and/or large compression systems (gas, CO₂, petrochemical, or power generation)
  • Strong knowledge of piping systems, pressure vessels, and plant integration
  • Proven track record of managing OEM packages and complex machinery installation
  • Familiarity with commissioning of rotating equipment and integrated process systems
  • Excellent stakeholder and interface management skills
