About the Role
Wirral Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Homeless Prevention & Assessment Officer to join the Supported Housing & Homelessness team. This Band G role is vital in helping vulnerable individuals and families access safe, affordable, and sustainable accommodation.

You’ll deliver a professional Housing Options service, offering advice, support, and tailored interventions to prevent homelessness and support long-term housing stability.

Key Responsibilities
Provide housing advice in line with the 1996 Housing Act, Homelessness Act 2002, and Children’s Act 1989

Identify risks of homelessness and develop personalised prevention plans

Liaise with internal departments, health services, landlords, and support agencies

Assist clients with complex needs, including safeguarding referrals

Manage temporary accommodation placements and move-on strategies

Conduct home visits and housing surgeries across the borough

Prepare court documentation and represent clients in housing hearings

Assess and allocate Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP)

Maintain accurate records and ensure data protection compliance

Who We’re Looking For
Essential Experience & Skills:

Substantial experience in homelessness prevention and housing advice

Strong interviewing and negotiation skills

Experience working with vulnerable groups and safeguarding procedures

Ability to manage complex cases and deliver sensitive support

Confident in using IT systems and maintaining accurate records

Desirable Knowledge:

Understanding of welfare reforms, landlord/tenant law, and eviction processes

Knowledge of the social and financial impact of homelessness

Creative problem-solving and effective communication skills
