Job Purpose
The Deputy Head Teacher plays a key role in the daily management and strategic direction of Tiverton Academy, supporting the Head Teacher and deputizing for them when absent. As a member of the leadership team, the Deputy Head will help shape the school's culture, vision, and objectives. This includes managing staff and resources to achieve school goals, and leading on specific whole-school initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
The Deputy Head Teacher will fulfill professional duties outlined in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document, with specific responsibilities in the following areas:
1. Leadership
Teaching & Learning: Lead the school's teaching and learning strategy, fostering a culture of continuous improvement through coaching, team-teaching, and modeling best practice.
Assessment: Oversee all statutory and internal assessment systems, including tracking and analyzing pupil data.
Pupil Premium: Lead on the school's pupil premium strategy, monitoring its impact and reporting on outcomes.
Pastoral Care: Oversee the pastoral care of all pupils, including behaviour management and safeguarding.
Staffing: Manage daily staff absences and cover, and support the Head Teacher in the day-to-day running of the school.
Wider Trust Support: Provide occasional support to the wider Academy Trust and attend relevant network meetings.
2. Managing Staff & Pupils
Recruitment: Assist with the recruitment of new teaching staff.
Performance Management: Demand ambitious standards from staff, conduct appraisals, provide professional development opportunities, and hold staff accountable for pupil outcomes.
Ethos: Create a supportive environment where staff are motivated and encouraged to develop their skills.
Professional Development: Commit to your own professional growth.
3. Teaching
Classroom Practice: Plan and teach well-structured lessons, following the school's curriculum and schemes of work.
Assessment: Assess, monitor, and report on pupil progress, adapting your teaching to meet individual needs.
High Expectations: Set high expectations that inspire and challenge pupils, promoting good progress.
Commitment: The role includes a minimum of two days per week of class teaching, with one day per week of dedicated leadership time.
4. Whole-School Organisation & Development
Policy: Contribute to the development and evaluation of school policies and procedures.
Wider School Life: Make a positive contribution to the school's wider ethos.
Cover: Provide cover for absent teachers when necessary.
Systems & Processes: Ensure school systems and processes are efficient and well-considered.
Financial Planning: Support strategic financial planning to ensure effective use of budgets.
Leadership Distribution: Support the distribution of leadership throughout the school.
5. Health, Safety & Discipline
Wellbeing: Promote the safety and well-being of pupils.
Discipline: Maintain good order and discipline, effectively managing behaviour to ensure a safe learning environment.
6. Professional Development & Communication
Appraisal: Participate in the Academy's appraisal procedures and ongoing professional development.
Communication: Effectively communicate with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals both within and beyond the school.
7. Personal & Professional Conduct
Ethical Standards: Uphold public trust in the teaching profession, maintaining high ethical standards both inside and outside the Academy.
Policies: Have proper regard for the school’s ethos, policies, and practices.
8. Safeguarding
Commitment: Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance and school policies.
Collaboration: Collaborate with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to promote the best interests of pupils.
Responsibility: Promote the safeguarding of all pupils.

Assessment Lead: Lead the whole-school assessment strategy. This includes tracking pupil performance data (especially for disadvantaged groups), planning interventions, and providing training to staff.
Pupil Wellbeing Lead: Establish and implement whole-school systems for pupil wellbeing. This involves conducting pupil voice surveys, promoting the school's behaviour policy, and analyzing data on attendance, behaviour, and exclusions.
