Role Purpose
Exciting Opportunity to Join a Brilliant Natural and Built Heritage Team with a Diverse Workload
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and committed professional, for the post of Landscape Architect within the Heritage and Design Team. You will provide specialist technical landscape and design advice in the delivery of the Council's statutory responsibilities in relation to the natural and built environment throughout the Scottish Borders. The Scottish Borders has a rich and varied rural environment, and landscape input is required on a wide range of projects, in particular for planning applications associated with the landscape and visual impact of windfarms and other forms of renewable energy.
The Scottish Borders is a region of diverse landscapes from the rolling upland hills and valleys with wild remote places, to the rugged Berwickshire Coast, with the river Tweed catchment system at its centre. The landscape supports agriculture, forestry, mature woodland and outdoor recreation as well as a rich and diverse wildlife. The history of the area and the built environment, as well as being a much-visited tourist destination adds to this richness from the 4 great Borders Abbeys, the large houses and estates with their designed landscapes to burgh towns and rural villages and unique vernacular buildings. The diversity of the Borders makes this a very special area to work in, and also brings a complex range of challenges, requiring creative and innovative solutions for the natural and built environment and the distinctive rural landscapes.
You will be at the heart of a committed team of brilliant and valued environmental specialists, covering landscape, trees, ecology, heritage and design and archaeology, working together to advise on the built and natural environment and Placemaking within the Planning, Housing and Buildings Standards Service. You will provide advice and guidance on a wide range of developments including renewables; windfarms, solar power and battery storage; forestry applications and housing proposals, and also input into Policy development for the LDP. You will provide advice on climate adaptation on landscapes and places and will help to deliver the Council’s programme of Capital Works and projects.
This is an interesting, busy, and diverse portfolio of work which requires a dynamic, innovative, and creative individual. You will be an experienced self-starter and passionate about landscape and design in Scotland, experience in reviewing or assessing landscape and visual impact for renewable energy developments and large-scale forestry proposals in larger rural landscape settings would be advantageous as experience. In addition to the Council's statutory responsibilities, the portfolio covers design-based projects, working with the wider council team including architects and engineers, within the Borders and wider interests with the South of Scotland Region.
It is the Council's aspiration to make the Scottish Borders a more sustainable and better place to live, work in, and to visit, and to improve the wellbeing of citizens. If this aligns with you, we would love to hear from you. The nature of the post lends itself to flexible working arrangements and working from home is supported. It is part of a Job Share post.
