Summary

A Vacancy at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The post represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic modern urologyteam. This is a full-time post with specific emphasis on providing a service focused onAdvanced BenignAndrology including Penile Implants and Penile Cancer.

The appointee will join a team of 20 Consultants already in post, 13 substantive, 3 locum and 4 joint colleagues. The resident’s rota includes 10 colleagues (5 deanery trainees and 5 fellows).

The current job plan is divided between out-patient (St George’s, Queen Mary’s), day surgery and in-patient delivery of services including surgery. The post attracts a 1:13 on-call commitment on the Urology Consultant of the week on-call rota (including weekend) which includes twice daily wards rounds with all patients being reviewed by the consultant. All elective commitments are cancelled when the consultant is consultant of the week. The appointee is expected to undertake teaching duties of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and other professional groups, to participate in research activities and to play a full part in the clinical governance programme.

The Department of Urology employs 20 Consultant Urological Surgeons (13 based at St George’s), with other colleagues holding joint appointments with neighbouring hospitals including Kingston and Epsom, St Helier and Croydon University Hospital.



St George’s Hospital is a major trauma centre. The team plays a prominent part in this role in providing emergency, reconstructive and long-term urological care in these patients. In particular, the team manage the urological injuries arising from renal trauma, pelvic fracture, priapism and penile fracture.



We run a consultant of the week on-call model with separate consultant cover week nights. During this time elective activities are cancelled to allow full focus on emergency work.



St George’s is part of RM Partners with the Royal Marsden Hospitals providing cancer treatment to a large volume of patients in South West London and in the wider regional network. St. George’s is the primary provider for complex cancer surgery. There is the requirement to work in multidisciplinary teams.



The penile cancer team has a defined catchment of 11 million and delivers the care for 36 hospital trusts across the South of England.
