Summary

The Strategy Unit (SU) sits at the heart of DCMS and oversees cross-cutting policy, legislation and fiscal events. We are a friendly, supportive and high performing team of around 35 people, leading on departmental strategy, working with teams and senior leaders across the department to develop long-term plans that meet our Ministers’ ambitions.

This role will sit in SU’s Cross-Government Strategy & Foresight Team. It’s an exciting time to join as the team is expanding to help the department identify and meet the challenges and opportunities of the next decade.

You will plan, manage and coordinate DCMS’s legislative programme, providing a strategic approach to how DCMS achieves its objectives through legislation.

This role will suit someone who is: passionate about delivering high-quality legislation; a strategic thinker; an effective project manager; and a skilled communicator who can facilitate, mediate and deliver through others.

We are looking for a self-motivated, collaborative, strategic thinker with strong project management and communication skills and experience of legislative delivery. You will be given the unique opportunity to work at the heart of the department, working closely with Ministers and officials at all levels of seniority and across all policy areas. Your work will be varied, impactful and truly cross-cutting.

You will:

  • Act as an in-house consultant to officials and Ministers, providing advice on the legislative process and DCMS legislation
  • Plan DCMS’s legislative programme and secure primary legislation through the annual, Cabinet Office-led legislative bidding round
  • Lead and coordinate DCMS’s preparations for the King’s Speech
  • Support DCMS teams as they deliver primary and secondary legislation
  • Coordinate the department’s secondary legislation programme together with the DCMS Parliamentary Team
  • Monitor other Government departments’ legislation and coordinate DCMS’s involvement where necessary
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships across Whitehall, particularly with Cabinet Office’s PBL Secretariat and legislative strategy teams in other Government departments
  • Ensure the department has the tools and resources it needs to deliver legislation effectively
