Summary
We are looking for an experienced enthusiastic colleague with good interpersonal skills to come and join our dynamic and innovative tertiary stroke service at University Hospital Southampton. We are one of the leading neuroscience centres in the UK having started a 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service in March 2025. We have already treated 250 patients this year, with over 400 predicted by the end of the year and performed the 3rd highest number of procedures nationwide in the spring. We admit 1400 stroke patients a year and provide on site 08:00 20:00 consultant support 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and on call from home 20:00 -08:00 on an 1:20 rota between 7 stroke physicians and 11 neurologists. We have a 13 bed HASU and 28 bed Acute Stroke and Rehabilitation Ward, F8. Recent innovations include the prehospital video triage to enhance and improve thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy treatment times and our same day post thrombectomy repatriation policy has gained national recognition and been replicated in other centres. We are a Hyper acute Stroke Research Centre (HSRC) and have contributed to recent major multicentre randomised controlled trials including ATTEST 2, OPTIMAS and ESCAPE-MeVO which have directly changed clinical practice. The UHS stroke service is innovative, flexible, ambitious, and high achieving. This post provides the opportunity for like-minded and enthusiastic colleagues to join us and contribute to our exciting plans.What experience / skills are needed Previous clinical experience in stroke medicine including thrombolysis and ideally mechanical thrombectomy Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with evidence of having participated in multidisciplinary stroke unit care Enthusiasm and passion for delivering high quality stroke care in line with UHSs core values patients first, working together and always improving. The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.
