Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Norfolk Children’s continence Service as a Band 6 continence nurse. The successful candidate will assess and treat children with constipation, nocturnal enuresis, daytime wetting and delayed toilet training. They will work autonomously within a friendly team of continence nurses and assistant practitioners, holding clinics across the Norfolk and Waveney locality.
Experience in paediatric continence is essential for this role. Up to 30 hours per week available.

· To act as a specialist resource for the promotion of continence and management of incontinence within the defined paediatric age group.
· To support staff in the assessment, selection and implementation of specialist continence care programmes in community and clinic settings for children and young people, within NCH&C NHS Trust.
• To develop and implement education and training programmes which support the role of relevant community staff working with this defined age group, e.g. Health Visitors, School Nurses, Community Children’s Nurses.

• Provide specialist support to clinical staff in the assessment and management of those children / young people aged 0-19 years who have more complex continence needs.
• To demonstrate specialist knowledge from theoretical and practical experience.
• To have specialist clinical skills to support the assessment of those children / young people with complex continence needs.
• Be competent in reaching a diagnosis for a patient’s continence symptoms and treat appropriately using clinical pathways and guidelines.
• To communicate sensitive information to patients and their carers, showing empathy and re-assurance; helping children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities to understand, accept and comply with advice given to support their continence condition where there maybe barriers to understanding.
• Refer children and young people to other specialists and agencies as appropriate.
• To develop, implement and evaluate continence management care plans in partnership with the child / young person, their families and carers whilst working in close co-operation with other clinical staff and disciplines.
• To assist in the education and training of registered staff, health care assistants and student nurses ensuring compliance to NMC standards to support learning and assessment in practice.
• To support and train parents / carers in the correct use of identified medical equipment and management programmes. To foster confidence, competence and independence in families caring for their children at home.
• Administer medications, treatments and interventions as prescribed and monitor their effects.
• Develop and maintain good working relationships with staff supporting the needs of children with disabilities; school nurses, health visitors, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, community children’s nurses, learning disability nurses, psychologists and all members of the integrated team.
• Provide initial triage and assessment for new referrals to paediatric continence service.
