Role
The Careers Team at De Montfort University is looking to recruit a part-time Postgraduate Taught Careers Adviser.
The Postgraduate Taught Careers Adviser will play a key role in enhancing the employability and career outcomes of postgraduate students within De Montfort University’s Leicester Castle Business School (LCBS). Working closely with colleagues across the Business School and wider university, the postholder will design, deliver, and evaluate a comprehensive programme of careers education, information, advice and guidance tailored to the postgraduate student community.
This role is part time working 22.2 hours a week.
Start Date: 29/09/2025
Expected end date: 29/09/2026
Interview date: TBC
This role is fully campus based.
Duties and responsibilities
Information, Advice and Guidance
Provide careers information, advice and guidance to taught postgraduate students via individual consultations and small groups, to help them focus on career plans and objectives, manage expectations, evaluate skills, and apply for opportunities in the UK and internationally.
Casework
Manage casework for postgraduate taught students, delivering one-to-one appointments. Lead and contribute to specialist resources for international students.
Student Resources
Maintain specialist knowledge of labour markets and recruitment trends. Develop and recommend careers guidance and resources, including an online resource base.
Communication and Liaison
Collaborate with colleagues to ensure effective communication of careers support. Encourage and support employer-led on-campus activity in partnership with the Employer Engagement Team.
Skills Development
Design and deliver career development learning activities for postgraduate taught and research students. Collaborate with LCBS to integrate employability within the curriculum and contribute to a professional skills award.
Data and Evaluation
Identify data needs, gather and analyse data, and measure effectiveness of careers support provision to inform improvements.
Professional Contribution
Engage with external professional networks (AGCAS, ISE, EFMD, Vitae) to contribute to best practice, source contributors, publish articles, and share innovation with colleagues.
Compliance and Equality
Comply with DMU policies including GDPR and Health & Safety. Treat all staff, students, and visitors with dignity and respect, ensuring services are inclusive and meet Equality Act 2010 requirements.
Other Duties
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for events. Perform any other duties commensurate with the role and grade as required.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Degree in related subject
- Sensitivity to a diverse range of staff and student needs and evidence of responding to their different needs
- Experience of presenting to largegroups
- Experience of group facilitation
- Experience of managing a caseload and delivering one-to-one support to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds
- Experience of effective networking with employers, agencies and professional bodies in the UK and internationally
- Experience as a careers guidance professional in the HE sector
- Understanding of the UK and global graduate labour market for postgraduates, employer recruitment practices and career roles within relevant occupational areas
- Experience of working with postgraduate taught students
- Experience of working with international students
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly to a variety of audiences and to identify and use appropriate means of communication according to the message and the audience
- Experience of using Microsoft Office applications, email, web-based applications and social media, especially LinkedIn
- Flexible approach to work, including availability to work occasional weekends and evenings
