Provision of comprehensive Cellular Pathology service to the users, including advice regarding appropriate specimen collection and investigations, interpretation of reports and the preparation of policies, procedures and guidelines. Review and validation of laboratory reports. Answer phone calls to and from clinical colleagues.

The department is committed to both undergraduate and postgraduate education. A commitment to the autopsy service is also desirable.

To be jointly responsible for the supervision, training and management of any junior staff in the department.

To be jointly responsible in the smooth and efficient running of the cellular pathology department.

Take joint responsibility with colleagues for quality assurance within the department including taking part in national external quality assurance programmes.

Subspecialist reporting is well developed with individuals reporting in at least 3 different areas.

Individual consultants are protected from excessive diagnostic workload by a workload management system that is based on the RCPath workload scoring system.

Each consultant Histopathologist in the department has sole use of a well-appointed office equipped with microscope and up to date IT facilities including the use of speech recognition software and proforma reporting (AES).
