Summary

The appointee will work closely with the other consultants in the department to provide comprehensive cardiac care for patients throughout the integrated care organisation (ICO). They will liaise with local general practitioners and colleagues within the wider hospital to ensure the safe and systematic delivery of high-quality cardiac services. The appointee will support the local cardiovascular agenda in line with departmental objectives in a manner that is compatible with the needs of the local population. The appointee will have subspecialty training in heart failure to complement the subspecialty interests of the other consultant cardiologists. The appointee will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and contribute to the proper functioning of the cardiology department, including undertaking administrative duties associated with patient care and the clinical supervision of resident medical staff. The appointee will be required to take part in local and national audits, to contribute to pursuing improvements in local clinical effectiveness and to undertake local mandatory training. The appointee will be expected to take responsibility for maintaining their continuing medical education to the standard required by the General Medical Council (UK), including participating in regular hospital appraisals. The appointee will be responsible to the Executive Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer for the satisfactory conduct of their professional duties. Clinical responsibilities Specific clinical responsibilities of the appointee will include: leading inpatient rounds on the cardiology ward on designated days, seeing patients and leading the multi-disciplinary board round contributing to the in-reach service to the acute admissions unit and other wards, including seeing patients and discussing cases with trainee doctors overseeing the care of patients in outpatient clinics and in the community, including seeing patients, arranging relevant investigations and instigating appropriate treatments providing direct clinical supervision to trainee doctors and nurse specialists providing advice and support for local general practitioners working collaboratively with other consultants and members of the department, including providing reasonable cover for annual and study leave of colleague consultant cardiologists.
