About the business unit
Mott MacDonald’s support services are the driving force behind our organisation enabling us to run efficiently and effectively. The team works collaboratively to offer specialist advice, best practice and technology to all areas of our business specifically designed for our global reach.
We are looking for an experienced health and safety manager to lead our expanding safety team, reporting into the Exec Sponsor for health and safety and with two direct reports.
This senior leadership role will drive the health and safety agendas across our business in our EUNA Region. The Regional Safety Manager is a principal source of health and safety advice for the business area they are appointed to. Their role is to monitor, advise and influence continual improvement of safety management, health and wellbeing.
Job description
- Lead and coordinate health and safety for the Region, ensuring effective implementation of Group and Regional policy.
- Drive an active safety culture across the region.
- Own the Regional health and safety plan.
- Act as the H&S conscience for the Regional Executive, provide regular status updates and promote board discussion around relevant health and safety subjects.
- Provide health and safety advice for staff and managers.
- Promote effective communication and dissemination of health, safety and security information.
- Carry out an annual health and safety management review at Regional level.
- Set and monitor health and safety objectives.
- Review Unit health and safety plans.
- Arrange for annual review of the relevant country specific health and safety legislation registers.
- Ensure delivery of the safety training programme across the Region.
- Keep abreast of developments in health and safety legislation and practice and act upon any changes accordingly.
- Liaise with enforcement authorities and other bodies as necessary.
- Participation at Regional Exec meetings, including reporting on performance.
- Preparation of Regional Exec and Board papers.
- Provide leadership, guidance and oversight of Mott MacDonald’s travel security processes across the Region.
- Co-ordinate health, safety and security issues with other BMS and safety managers and representatives as required.
- Ensure appropriate dissemination of information to other relevant people.
- Develop Regional business continuity plan.
- Manage suppliers (PPE and driver licence checks).
- Oversee response to Building Safety Act and associated legislation.
- Participate as a Regional committee member for Mott MacDonald Alerts.
- Participate as a member of the Regional BMS, health and safety & risk committee (BRC).
- Set a personal example.
Essential
- First and foremost be an experienced health and safety professional with experience in developing a positive safety culture.
- Confident communicator, able to stay calm under pressure and deliver clear and reasoned recommendations.
- Confident in giving briefs and reviewing/editing the work of others as well as producing your own.
- People management experience, with a track record of managing and developing talent and creating enjoyable and high performing team environments.
- Great team player who embodies our company values and culture, someone who focuses on the good of the business and function, as well as your own team.
- Outstanding collaborator able to form trusted relationships, and the ability to welcome different perspectives, with empathy for the positions of others.
- Health and safety related degree or other equivalent qualification from an appropriate body.

- Keen interest in developing your own skills, as well as the skills of others. Previous experience working in an engineering consultancy environment.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in a similar role; experience of working in a senior health and safety position.
- Capability to lead client thinking and market presence.
- The ability to influence management in identifying and managing risk.
- Being able to assess situations calmly and confidently in the full business context.
- Ability to deal efficiently with priorities and manage time appropriately.
- A dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to effectively communicate and influence at all levels including external stakeholders.
