Summary
UHB admits approximately 1600 stroke patients per year through our HASU based at QEHB but a large number are repatriated to one of our ASUs at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital within 48 -- 72 hours. Stroke Clinical fellow post would be based in ASU in Good Hope Hospital. It is a 24 bedded purpose built acute stroke unit served by specialist Multidisciplinary team consisting of 2 stroke consultants, 2 advanced stroke nurse practitioners, 1 IMT, 2 FYs, 2 JSD and senior neurotherapies team. There is daily stroke MDT meeting in the morning to discuss action plans for individual patients. Stroke consultants in GHH Stroke Unit: Dr Raj Yadava and Dr Khaled Darawil There is also a close working relationship with our rehabilitation colleagues in the local community hospitals (Moseley Hall) who provide both general stroke and specialist regional neurorehabilitation where needed. Hyper acute stroke patients presenting within working hours are directly referred to the HASU team for IV thrombolysis / mechanical thrombectomy and / or recruitment into acute trials as indicated. The stroke service is ably supported by stroke research nurses and has recently been awarded hyper-acute Stroke Research Centre status (HSRC). Most of the stroke consultants are GCP trained and are local PIs for one or more research projects and co-recruit to each other's trials. The neuroradiology department are very supportive of the acute stroke service and offer multimodal CT / MRI / CT perfusion scanning, a regular neurovascular MDT meeting on Fridays and a full thrombectomy service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thrombolysis out of working hours is covered by the neurology/Stroke registrar on call and supervised by a stroke specialist consultant or neurology consultant on a 1 in 7 rota. The QEH neurosurgeons provide a regional service for decompressive hemicraniectomy and posterior fossa decompression.
