Summary

Research Associates in Paleoclimate Reconstruction (2 posts)

We are looking for 2 paleoclimate scientists to join the ERC project NatClim (Predicting the Natural Future of Earth’s Climate) within the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Cardiff University. Within this part of NatClim we will produce quantitative reconstructions of deep ocean temperature, ice volume and ocean circulation at multiple locations across several targeted intervals. These will form the basis for empirical calibrations that we will use to predict the hypothetical natural baseline of Earth’s climate, free from the influence of human activity. Combined with state-of-the-art numerical modelling, this will allow us to quantify the absolute future anthropogenic effect in 4 dimensions.

In this role
• You will conduct original research within the paleoclimate laboratories at Cardiff University.
• Help supervise the work of research students within the same project.
• Prepare your work for publication and contribute to the wider goals of the NatClim project
We’d like to hear from you
• If you, have a PhD (or equivalent) in Paleoclimate or Paleoceanography.
• Have extensive experience with foraminiferal geochemical and/or paleo-ocean circulation proxies.
• Have knowledge of the current status of research in ice volume reconstruction and/or paleo-ocean circulation.
We can offer you the chance to work in a vibrant organisation, with great benefits and opportunities for progression. We are a proud Living Wage supporter.

Please contact Steve Barker (barkers3@cardiff.ac.uk) for an informal, confidential discussion about the role.

This position is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed-term appointment for a period of 48 months.

Salary: £40,497 - £45,413 per annum (Grade 6)

This post has previously been advertised to employees of Cardiff University only. We now invite external applications.

We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of staff from many different backgrounds who have the ambition to create a University which seeks to fulfil our social, cultural and economic obligation to Cardiff, Wales, and the world. In supporting our employees to achieve a balance between their work and their personal lives, we will also consider proposals for flexible working or job share arrangements.

Applications may be submitted in Welsh, and an application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

Cardiff University is a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions we will evaluate applicants on the quality of their research, not publication metrics or the identity of the journal in which the research is published.
