Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Gastroenterologist (on a full-time or part-time basis) – this post underpins continued expansion in the Trust’s Gastroenterology specialty.

Successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a special interest to complement the other members of the department and will participate in the provision of the Gastroenterology service to the population of North Tyneside and Northumberland. Applicants will have specialty training and experience alongside accreditation in both Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine (GIM).

A multi-disciplinary team approach to Gastroenterology is actively in place across sub-specialties and we are working with our primary care colleagues to build an excellent service, and this post provides an opportunity to join an organisation in which Clinicians are at the forefront of management. Opportunities are available to participate in education and teaching, alongside clinical research.

Applications are welcomed for full-time and part-time opportunities from existing Specialty Trainees within six months of achieving CCT, alongside existing Consultants or Post-CCT Clinical Fellows.

Applications are welcomed from candidates with an interest in General Gastroenterology, specific sub-specialty interest in one or more of the following areas would complement existing provision: Liver Medicine/Hepatology, Nutrition and Therapeutic Endoscopy (mainly ERCP and EUS).

The post you are applying for will involve trust wide working across all sites, including on-call and emergency provision at the new Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington for Gastroenterology which includes some General Internal Medicine caseload on Ward 4.

Elective Gastroenterology and Hepatology outpatient work will be primarily based at North Tyneside General Hospital and Wansbeck General Hospital, working alongside the existing Multi-Disciplinary Teams.

The post will be flexibly scheduled to meet the skillsets and sub-specialty interests of the successful applicant, alongside the demands of the service. Through the acute week the work is split between dealing with emergency gastroenterology admissions and undertaking emergency Upper GI endoscopy cases. The overnight emergency on-call is alternated between two GI Consultants. Approximately every 10th week and you will also cover the base Gastroenterology Ward at NTGH site from 9am-5pm with support from Gastroenterology Middle Grade Doctors/Registrars. At all other times the job plan is devoted to elective work based on professional sub-specialty interests and service need.

A typical week would consist of 10 Programmed Activities (PA’s), including a minimum allocation of 1.5 SPA’s for Supporting Professional Activities. Additional SPA’s will be available dependent upon service need as required. There are additional PA’s available for Education and Clinical supervision.

Jointly responsible for the provision of Gastroenterology to the population of North Tyneside and Northumberland. The post holder will be encouraged to develop special interests to complement the other members of the department and will work with managers and professional colleagues in ensuring maximum efficiency of the service.

Manage personal workload in such a way to ensure where possible service contract levels are achieved. Participate in the provision of cover on a shared basis with colleagues for periods of annual, sickness and study leave, except for prolonged absence where locum cover may be necessary.

Provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under his/her care and assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.

Maintain an awareness and commitment to organisational priorities and ensure these are communicated effectively to colleagues and staff. Engage constructive debates about organisational issues through a willingness to interact positively with managers – showing mutual respect to ensure a similar level of respect in turn.
