Summary

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a high level of competence in managing both general and specialist Glaucoma cases, including laser procedures. Proficiency in cataract surgery and experience in glaucoma surgery are essential. The post holder will also contribute to the regional Eye Casualty Department, providing emergency ophthalmic care.Initially, the role will be based primarily at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC). However, as the Trust prepares for the implementation of the Right Care, Right Here programme, there may be a requirement to work across other Trust sites.BMEC is equipped with state-of-the-art multimodal diagnostic imaging, including FFA/ICG, wide-field imaging, and OCT-angiography, as well as a full suite of ophthalmic lasers. The department also runs an Ophthalmic Local Training (OLT) programme, offering four posts for candidates wishing to complete their training aspirations.There are opportunities to participate in ongoing research projects and clinical trials. The post holder will play a key role in developing innovative approaches to Glaucoma care, including the expansion and streamlining of virtual services, which is a departmental priority.Applicants must be trained in advanced Glaucoma and cataract surgery and be capable of independently performing laser procedures. The role also includes teaching and training responsibilities for allied health professionals, trainees, and fellows.A detailed job plan and work schedule will outline the structure of the role, including location, responsibilities, and working hours. The successful candidate will participate in specialist Glaucoma clinics, with the option to include other subspecialties based on individual interests during the job planning process. The post holder will also contribute to the busy Eye Emergency Department, providing services in A&E, urgent care, and emergency clinics.Extensive training and experience in ophthalmology are essential.
