Summary

In June 2025, it was announced that the Government Cyber Directorate will move from the Cabinet Office to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) as a part of a machinery of government change. This change aims to bring together the digital transformation of public services into one central department, presenting exciting opportunities and positioning DSIT to lead the government’s digital agenda.

This role is in scope to formally transfer to DSIT when the machinery of government change takes place. If your start date is on the transfer date, when this is confirmed, you will be appointed direct to DSIT and your appointment will be unaffected by the machinery of government change. We are currently consulting with our Trade Unions on which policies, terms and conditions will apply on transfer. The statement of changes applied to all other Cabinet Office staff will also apply to you if you are successful.

The Government Digital Service (GDS) is the digital centre for Government, where we are collectively responsible for setting, leading and delivering the vision for a modern digital Government. As the Cyber Directorate, our mission is to protect public services and the wider Government from cyber threats, set strategic direction for Government and the public sector on cyber security, finding standards and policies through the Government Cyber Security Standard and the Cyber Policy Handbook. We assure system and organisation cyber security via initiatives such as GovAssure. Our team leads the operational response to cyber threats, vulnerabilities and incidents through the Government Coordination Centre (GC3) and manages the GCSS Portfolio to implement strategy across central Government and departments.

Please note the below list of job duties is not exclusive or exhaustive and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Senior Cyber Advisor (Assurance)

As a Senior Cyber Advisor (Assurance) you will directly contribute to the delivery of the Government Cyber Security Strategy’s aim to ensure that government organisations have the right structures, mechanisms, tools and support in place to manage their cyber security risks. You will operate within the Assurance Team which works closely with government organisations to support their participation with GDS’ security assurance schemes such as GovAssure.

Key responsibilities:

You will:
• Build trusted relationships with security teams in Lead Government Departments and Arms Length Bodies to support them with the implementation of GDS’ assurance schemes (predominantly GovAssure);
• Advise these stakeholders on the implementation of the assurance process, including supporting scoping activity and risk-based, proportionate application;
• Conduct quality assurance reviews of documentation at set stages of the process;
• Identify opportunities for improvement to the scheme as part of our continuous improvement process.

Senior Cyber Advisor (Engagement)

As a Senior Cyber Advisor (Engagement) you will work within the Cyber Engagement Team which is responsible for relationship management with government organisations and coordinating engagement on central cyber policy initiatives, capability development, cyber programme spend and incident coordination. You will engage regularly with senior security stakeholders such as Heads of Cyber, Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and Security Advisors within government organisations and in some cases the wider public sector. You will build and maintain strong networks across an allocated portfolio of organisations and will be responsible for supporting these organisations to implement GDS initiatives such as ‘GovAssure’. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to policy, strategy and incident response work as well as senior briefings.

Key responsibilities:

You will:
• Build strong relationships with security stakeholders across Lead Government Departments and Arms Length Bodies, owning a portfolio of organisations to engage with about GDS initiatives.
• Have strong communication skills and the ability to distil complex information into different formats, to suit the needs of technical and non-technical audiences.
• Translate stakeholder needs and feedback into recommended improvements for wider GDS teams, acting as the “voice of the customer”.
