The vacancy has arisen in the Oral & Maxillofacial department for a Trust Doctor equivalent to DCT to commence September 2025 for a maximum of 12 months. An Introduction to the Division/Specialty from Mr. Neil Horisk, Speciality Doctor in OMFS (TPD in DCT) The department of Oral & Facial specialties is based at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. The team consists of 4 Consultants in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, 2 outreach OMFS Oncology Consultants, 3 Consultants in Orthodontics, 1 P/T Consultant in Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology, 6 Specialty Doctors in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, 1 Oral Surgery StR, 1 OMFS StR, 2 P/T STRs in Orthodontics, 7 F/T Dental Core Trainees and 4 P/T JDFCTs in Oral & Maxillo-Facial Surgery. A multi-tiered on-call service between Wakefield and Leeds is provided. The appointee is resident on-call for Pinderfields Hospital with a 1:7 full-shift working pattern. Routine and acute duties are at Pinderfields General Hospital but, when on acute on-call, there could be requests to give advice to the Accident and Emergency Departments at Pontefract General Infirmary and Dewsbury District Hospital. Supervised clinics and surgery also takes place at these peripheral hospital sites. The Service Role From a clinical perspective these posts will participate in the cross site junior trainee rota. The junior trainee rota is compliant with the 2016 junior doctor contract averaging 48 hours per week. Duties will be based primarily on our Pinderfields Hospital site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites. These roles will enable the post holder to take supervised responsibility for patient care and consolidate the skills they have learned at medical/dental school. As the post holder gains experience they will remain under clinical supervision but take on increasing responsibility for patient care. In particular they will begin to make management decisions as part of their progress to independent practice. During their tenure the post holder will further develop their core generic skills and contribute more to the education and training of the wider healthcare workforce. At the end of their tenure the post holder will have begun to demonstrate clinical effectiveness, leadership and the decision making responsibilities that are essential for the next stage of their careers. Terms & Conditions and Tenure Employment will be as a MYDoc Dental Core Trainee on Trust Terms and Conditions of Service. The post is offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months. Pay Scale These roles are equivalent to a doctor on the Core training programme and will be paid on the equivalent pay scale. Salary scale commences at £52,656 per annum. Appraisal and Revalidation This post is not recognised for training but brings with it an obligation to engage with the process of revalidation on an annual basis (Medical only). All our Trust appointed dentists are required to engage positively with appraisal and for doctors, revalidation. The Trust has procedures that comply with national recommendations. As a Trust employed doctor on a fixed term contract successfully appointed applicants will need to have a prescribed connection with Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust via GMC Connect and will therefore have Dr Richard Robinson, the Chief Medical Officer at the Trust as their GMC Responsible Officer. Continuing Professional Development The Trust requires all its dentists/doctors to engage with continuing professional development, guided by the relevant professional associations or Royal Colleges. Time and funding is provided according to departmental and Trust policies, subject to approval through the clinical management structures. There is a programme of mandatory training which all relevant staff must complete as required. Research Dental/Medical staff are encouraged to develop areas of personal and/or research interest. This can be developed in liaison with the Trusts R&D department and in line with prevailing policies and research frameworks. The Trust is developing an expanding and outward-looking research programme. Educational & Clinical Supervision The post holder will have a named educational supervisor and be expected to hold regular meetings with them during their tenure to ensure appropriate development during their appointment. Teaching The Trust is keen to maintain its reputation for high quality training and to attract the highest calibre of trainee and career-grade doctors. All senior doctors are involved in training our doctors, students and other professions. There are many opportunities to develop training and education roles and many have taken on educational leadership roles within and beyond the Trust. Audit and Clinical Governance There is a rolling half-day clinical governance programme and audit meetings are well attended and lively. The Clinical Audit Department assists with setting and supporting an audit programme for the Service with which all colleagues are encouraged to engage. Clinical Audit is considered within objectives as part of job planning.
