Summary

NHS Job Description: Respiratory Nurse Role Summary: 15-20 hours The Respiratory Nurse will be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team, responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to patients with a wide range of respiratory conditions. The post holder will work collaboratively with colleagues in both primary and secondary care to ensure seamless and patient-centered services. Key Responsibilities: Clinical Practice: Conduct comprehensive and autonomous assessments of patients with respiratory conditions such as Asthma & COPD. Develop, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans based on patient needs and in line with national and local guidelines (e.g., NICE and BTS). Run specialist nurse-led clinics for chronic disease management, including Asthma and COPD reviews. Assess patients for home oxygen therapy and other respiratory interventions, ensuring safe and appropriate use. Deliver patient and carer education, empowering them to manage their condition, improve self-care, and enhance their quality of life. Respond to patient and family queries, providing sensitive and complex information with empathy and reassurance. Leadership & Service Development: Act as a clinical expert and resource for other healthcare professionals, providing specialist advice and education on respiratory care. Participate in the development and implementation of clinical protocols and service improvement initiatives. Contribute to clinical audits and data collection to ensure services are effective and meet quality standards. Engage in continuous professional development and maintain a personal portfolio of evidence to demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills. Professional & Administrative: Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in line with Trust policy and professional regulations. Work autonomously and manage a patient caseload effectively, prioritising workload and delegating appropriately. Participate in team meetings, multi-disciplinary team (MDT) discussions, and relevant service meetings. Adhere to all practice policies and procedures, including those related to risk management and clinical governance. Qualifications & Experience: Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). A relevant nursing degree or diploma. Proven post-registration experience, preferably in a primary care, community, or acute respiratory setting. Specialist training and/or qualifications in respiratory care, including Asthma & COPD. Demonstrable experience of working autonomously and managing a patient caseload. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills. Knowledge of current NHS policy and the national agenda for respiratory care.
