About NH Care
NH Care offers exceptional residential care and educational provision for children and young people with complex needs. Based in Birmingham, we operate five homes where children feel safe and supported. Our school, New Horizon Academy, supports 11–16-year-olds with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges.
We’re committed to creating nurturing environments where every child thrives — emotionally, socially and academically.
Purpose of the Role
As a Residential Care Practitioner, you’ll provide high-quality, child-centred care to children and young people with learning disabilities, behavioural challenges, and emotional needs. You’ll work collaboratively with a close-knit team to promote wellbeing, personal development and independence in line with individual care plans.
Key Responsibilities
• Deliver compassionate care in a safe, inclusive home setting
• Support young people’s education, social activities, life skills and holidays
• Provide personal care, including hygiene, mobility, sexual health and medical support
• Assist with communication, using Makaton, sign language or other preferred methods
• Promote positive behaviour using Team Teach methods
• Maintain accurate records in line with GDPR and safeguarding standards
• Help young people build independent living skills and manage finances
• Cook nutritious meals and uphold food hygiene standards
• Attend meetings, supervision and contribute to ongoing service improvement
• Build relationships with families, professionals and the wider community
• Participate in lone working when required and follow safeguarding protocols
• Drive company vehicles (if applicable) and ensure their upkeep
Experience and Qualifications
We’re looking for individuals with:
• Experience supporting children with learning disabilities, SEMH needs or challenging behaviours
• Background in residential or social care settings
• Strong communication skills with children, families and professionals
• NVQ Level 3 or QCF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (or willingness to undertake)
• Willingness to complete relevant apprenticeships and functional skills training
• Commitment to all mandatory training and professional development
• Knowledge of safeguarding, equality, and inclusion
• ICT skills and ability to use email, internet and basic software
Personal Qualities
We value warmth, empathy and resilience. You’ll bring:
• A friendly, approachable manner with excellent listening skills
• Positivity, creativity and a good sense of humour
• Reliability, professionalism and adaptability under pressure
• A non-judgmental, inclusive mindset that promotes the rights of looked-after children
• Ability to reflect, grow and support others
• Willingness to work flexibly across settings and changing priorities
This is more than a job — it’s a chance to build meaningful relationships and leave a lasting impact in a child’s life.
