Job Description Healthcare Assistant (HCA) Job Title: Healthcare Assistant Location: The Portchester Practice, Fareham Responsible to: Practice Nurse Lead / Practice Manager Salary: Dependent on experience Hours: Between 08:0018:30 Monday to Friday (hours negotiable) Contract: Permanent Job Summary: The Healthcare Assistant will work under the guidance of the nursing team and other clinicians to provide safe, effective and high-quality care to patients. The role includes assisting with a wide range of clinical duties, promoting health and wellbeing, supporting the smooth running of the practice, and contributing to the wider team effort. Key Responsibilities and Duties: Clinical Duties: Perform phlebotomy Carry out NHS Health Checks (including new patient and learning disability checks) Record and monitor vital signs (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, temperature) Conduct ECGs Carry out blood glucose testing and urinalysis Undertake wound care and dressing changes as required Administer immunisations under Patient Specific Direction (PSD) Support minor surgery clinics (e.g. setup, chaperoning, aftercare) Remove sutures and clips Provide lifestyle and health promotion advice (e.g. smoking cessation, weight management) Support with infection prevention and control processes Ensure appropriate clinical coding and accurate record-keeping Administrative/Operational Duties: Use EMIS Web to record patient data accurately and appropriately Maintain clinical areas, equipment and stock levels Participate in audits, data collection and quality improvement activities Follow protocols relating to infection control, clinical waste, and health & safety Handle patient queries within scope of competence and escalate as needed Person Specification: CriteriaEssentialDesirableExperiencePrevious HCA experience in a healthcare settingExperience in general practiceQualificationsCare Certificate or equivalent experienceNVQ Level 3 in Health & Social CareSkills & CompetenciesPhlebotomy, ECGs, wound care, blood glucose testing, immunisationsExperience supporting minor surgery clinics, suture removalCommunicationStrong interpersonal and written communication skillsExperience delivering brief health interventionsIT & Record KeepingConfident using clinical systems EMIS Web preferredFamiliarity with SNOMED codingPersonal AttributesPatient-centred, reliable, flexible, team-focusedEnthusiastic about ongoing learning and developmentTraining & ComplianceBLS, infection control training (or willingness to complete)Participation in QOF or quality improvement activities Confidentiality and Safeguarding: The post-holder must maintain patient confidentiality at all times and comply with data protection (GDPR) regulations.
