The role:

Are you an experienced legal professional looking for your next challenge in local government?

We are seeking a proactive and committed Lawyer to join the Housing Litigation & Children’s Social Care Team.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact, working on a broad and rewarding caseload at the heart of public service.



Key responsibilities:

Provide clear, concise, and proactive legal advice and assistance to members and officers of the Council
Personally handle complex litigation and advocacy, including judicial reviews, and instruct counsel where appropriate
Advise on the Council’s powers and ensure the legality of its decision-making processes
Draft and amend legal documentation and reports for submission to Members
Attend committees and other meetings to provide legal support
Supervise and support Senior Legal Assistants, Legal Assistants and/or Trainees as directed
Contribute to the smooth running and development of the wider Legal Services team
Support corporate legal and strategic initiatives
Provide legal support on disputes with third parties, data protection, FOI requests, complaints, and Members’ enquiries
Deliver training to clients, Members, and legal colleagues as needed
Keep abreast of legal developments and advise clients on necessary actions or implications



What the client is looking for:

Qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (CILEX)
In-depth knowledge of Civil Procedure Rules, housing law (disrepair, possession, ASB, unlawful occupation, arrears), Housing Acts 1985 & 1996, Equality Act 2010, notices to quit, access/nuisance injunctions, succession, housing fraud and homelessness
Substantial post-qualification legal experience
Recent experience advising on and conducting housing litigation for local authorities
Advocacy experience in County Court on housing matters
Able to manage complex housing caseloads with minimal supervision
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to give clear and proactive legal advice in a manner which supports clients in achieving their organisational objectives
Skilled in case preparation for hearings
Confident courtroom advocate
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Persuasive and articulate in presenting legal arguments
Capable of supervising, guiding and training junior staff
Experienced in instructing and briefing Counsel, attending conferences, hearings and inquiries
Ability to deputise for the Chief/Senior Lawyer in the team
