The Opportunity
We are working with a leading food manufacturing business in Bedford, currently seeking an experienced and hands-on Maintenance Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of the engineering function across two manufacturing sites, reporting directly to the Plant Manager. This is a floor-based, proactive leadership role with responsibility for reactive and preventative maintenance, team development, and compliance with food safety and statutory engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineers across shifts, ensuring high standards of attendance, performance, and ongoing development.
- Oversee and deliver effective reactive and preventative maintenance for both sites.
- Maintain strict adherence to the PM plan and ensure all documentation is up to date.
- Ensure compliance with food safety, H&S legislation, and BRC codes of practice.
- Manage all external contractors on site in line with company H&S policies.
- Administer IFS (Industrial & Financial Systems) reports and work orders to agreed standards.
- Develop and control a strategic spares management system, including critical spares planning within budget.
Qualifications & Experience
To be successful in this role, you will need:
Engineering qualifications:
- HNC or HND in Engineering, Building Services, or Facilities Management
- IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate (essential for H&S compliance)
Experience:
- 5+ years in engineering or technical maintenance roles
- 2-5 years of supervisory/management experience
Strong background in:
- Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)
- Statutory compliance (LOLER, PUWER, COSHH, etc.)
- Leading internal teams and working with contractors
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of health & safety regulations (including COSHH, DSEAR, PTW)
- Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and team leadership
- Hands-on mindset with the ability to work in fast-paced, factory-based environments
