South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic resident doctor with experience and interest in General Adult Psychiatry to join our 18 bed acute male inpatient ward at the Maudsley Hospital – John Dickson Ward in South London. These is a full time fixed term contract for 6 months. There are opportunities after this fixed term to explore other available roles in SLAM.
If you are looking for an exciting front line clinical role with opportunities to be involved in service development and incorporating quality improvement methodology to evaluate changes, then this is the ideal post for you.
The post-holders will work under the supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist on the ward, with a resident doctor in higher training and another SHO-level resident doctor, and the full support of a comprehensive MDT.
We welcome applications from residents who may be looking to take a break from training in the near future or from doctors who have completed the Foundation Programme and are looking to get more experience in psychiatry.It is essential that applicants have completed their foundation training and have experience of working in health care settings in the UK prior to applying for this post.
You will be expected to work from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. It is not planned that this post will participate in the Southwark resident on-call rota.

The essential duty in this role includes day to day assessment and management of patients with acute and severe mental illness who have been admitted to the ward. Patients can be admitted informally or under the Mental Health Act.
Average length of stay (LOS) on Southwark is about 28 days, and the ward aims to discharge between 3 to 5 patients per week. There are a number of trust wide on going QI projects aimed at optimising antipsychotic medication, reducing restrictive practice, and improving flow (reducing LOS and increasing discharges where possible).

The applicant must be able to conduct in depth informed clinical interviews, to be able to do mental state assessments, risk assessments (with risk management plan – supported by team Consultant and MDT colleagues), general physical examination and request relevant investigations like ECG, bloods and formulate appropriate treatment plans with the clinical team and support their implementation.
The ward has daily hand over meetings (also called as direct clinical care meetings/DCCM), which the post holder will need to participate in, plus twice weekly ward rounds. Although ward rounds are MDT-run and consultant-chaired, the post holder will be expected to support the higher training resident doctor to run these meetings in the absence of the consultant.
Please note that there will always be nominal consultant cover should the regular consultant be on leave, so the post holder can be reassured of senior support at these times.
