Summary


The post holder will be instrumental in promoting the success of the Occupational Health (OH) Service ensuring that employees receive a high quality service based on the principles of good clinical governance. The primary outcome will be that the highest standards of OH are achieved and the post holder will maximise the use of resources and exploit development opportunities to their fullest potential. The post holder will demonstrate specialist knowledge and expertise in OH as a clinician, educator, advisor and advocate. Other outcomes will include empowering staff within the field, acting as a change agent and role model, and ensuring good working relationships.

Key Result Areas:



1. Promotion of the highest clinical standards in the management of OH work in conjunction with the Lead consultant and Head of Service to provide effective delivery and management of the service

2. Participation in the teaching and clinical supervision of the OH team including clinical and educational supervision of doctors in training

3. Active participation in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit

4. Active participation in continuing medical education for self and others

5. Participation in regular audit activities of clinical activity and effectiveness that aid improvement and extension to OH service

6. Enhancement and development of the Trust OH services

7. Effective contribution to reaching the Trust’s vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes.



Overview of Responsibilities:



Clinical Activities

· Pre-placement occupational health assessments

· Intra-employment assessments regarding fitness for work and rehabilitation following management or self-referrals. The post holder will have a clinical caseload and also support the OH nursing team and specialty trainee with their casework

· Support OH nursing team in their activities including immunisation programmes, pre-placement work health assessments, management of sharps injuries

· Providing advice on assessment and management of health risks in the workplace

· Providing advice on assessment and management of workplace environmental risks

· Policy writing, attending Trust – wide committee meetings, clinical governance activities – shared with other members of the team.



Management and Leadership

· Work in conjunction with the Head of Occupational Health and Lead Consultant to analyse the needs of the OH business and assist with the design and development of a structure and infrastructure to support excellence in service delivery

· Contribute to the design and development of OH services ensuring that OH services and products are benchmarked and continuously improved to enhance their value to the Trust and to attract external contracts

· Champion employee health and well being

· Actively contribute to and influence the formulation of strategic management of employee health, safety and welfare issues to enable the provision of a safer, healthier environment for employees, patients and visitors

· Articulate the Trust vision, mission and strategic goals with particular emphasis on OH.



Liaison and Communication

· Demonstrate a high degree of communication skills to work with all levels of employees using the service, potential new employees and other health professionals

· Liaise closely with stake holders in other sections of the Trust and external organisations e.g. Human Resources, Public Health, GPs and specialists

· Network with professional colleagues, professional bodies, partner organisations, other NHS organisations, GP’s and the Department of Health relating to OH issues to ensure awareness of current initiatives and that best practice is adopted by the service to reduce business risk and develop cost effective policies.



Health and Safety

· Assist managers in identifying areas for health improvement, to improve employee health, employee performance and patient care

· Assist managers and the Trust Health and Safety team in the risk assessment process for hazards at work

· Ensure accurate, appropriate and timely implementation of relevant legislation, national standards and directives.



Personal and Professional Accountability

· Ensure that all national professional requirements – training, confidentiality, conduct and ethics are adhered to

· Ensure adherence to all Trust policies and procedures

· Participate in departmental case review meetings, multidisciplinary clinical audit, teaching and CPD sessions

· Ensure that all OH advice to managers and employees is in line with the professional standards

· Contribute to the development and training strategy of the service so that the service can meet the capability needs of the strategic and business plans

· Maintain professional knowledge and competence, by reading relevant publications, membership of professional organisations, research and development, and attending appropriate study days and courses.



Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching Foundation Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations.
