Summary
Job Purpose:
The Waste Disposal Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the efficient, compliant, and environmentally responsible disposal of waste. This includes supervising waste collection and segregation operations, ensuring adherence to all legal and environmental regulations, liaising with disposal partners and regulatory bodies, and implementing continuous improvements in waste reduction, recycling, and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee all waste disposal activities, including collection, segregation, transport, treatment, and final disposal.
Ensure compliance with all local and national regulations (e.g., Environmental Protection Act 1990, Hazardous Waste Regulations, Duty of Care, Waste Transfer Notes).
Manage waste handling procedures for various waste streams, including general, hazardous, clinical, and recyclable waste.
Coordinate with third-party waste contractors and treatment facilities, including contract negotiation and service monitoring.
Maintain accurate waste tracking records, licenses, permits, and regulatory documentation.
Conduct risk assessments, audits, and inspections related to waste disposal operations.
Train and supervise waste handling staff to ensure safety and compliance with best practices.
Monitor waste volumes, generate reports, and identify opportunities for waste reduction and improved sustainability.
Liaise with regulatory bodies (e.g., Environment Agency, local councils) during inspections and ensure timely reporting.
Contribute to sustainability initiatives and ensure environmental policies are embedded into daily operations.
Key Skills & Competencies:
Strong understanding of waste legislation, environmental compliance, and health & safety protocols.
Excellent organizational, supervisory, and decision-making skills.
Familiarity with waste classification, storage, and handling procedures.
Competence in using waste management software and generating compliance reports.
Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
Ability to manage budgets and negotiate service contracts.
Qualifications & Experience:
Degree or diploma in Environmental Management, Waste Management, or related field.
Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a waste management or environmental services role.
WAMITAB or equivalent industry-recognised certification (desirable).
IOSH Managing Safely (advantageous).
Full UK driving licence (if applicable).
